Hey guys, I ordered a 5 stage RODI on Friday, but I was wondering if anybody had any water that I could mix up to get the cycle started on my rock. I have a tank that will hold water and rock, but I am still shopping for a tank that I will use when everything is done. I am looking at a rimless 65, but there is a 65 breeder that I might end up getting. Anyway, no worries if you don't have any, but if you do, please let me know.
Thanks,
Paul

Might help if you indicate how much RODI you're wanting and what part of town you are in

Or for your rock to cycle, just use tap water and dechlorinate it before salting. I think a lot of people do that...

I've done that in the past with no issues. It's sort of a waste to use RODI water if you're cycling your tank. The water's going to get fouled anyway and you shouldn't have any corals to worry about.

I would not recommend the TW and declorinate method. However you can go to HEB or Walmart and either get those 5 gallon jugs of water, or you could get the 1 gallon purified water jugs if they dont have enough of the 5 gallon jugs. The purified water has a TDS reading of 6 - 9.

Why is that? Have you had a bad experience while cycling a tank with it? What I worry about most with using tap water is nitrates along with calcium and alkalinity levels. I guess copper could be a concern as well. While I'm cycling a tank, I don't really care about those. I'm just curious since I'll probably be using tap water to start a new build. There are several nice tanks on here that use tap water for water changes.

From the video I watched from Mr Saltwater. ANd yes I know there are several members here who strictly use TW for their tanks that thrive succesfully. My main concern with using TW IMO is that the trace metals and chlorine will leach into your sand and LR. Yes the declorination takes care of the chlorine, but not the trace metals.

Fair enough. I'd be interesting to see how much metal is in the water because I know even salt mixes have trace amounts of metal.
