I just picked this one up after my other tank cracked while sitting on the patio waiting to be reworked. I forgot to take before pictures of the stand and canopy, but they did look pretty good. It was the typical stained wood finish. I decided to paint it to cover the few blemishes it had. I am happy with the way it turned out. As of right now, there is no plumbing hooked up. It is just sitting there waiting for me to get off my rear end and do something.

Thanks guys! I am not sure if I am going to do a reef with this one. I thought about some zoas and softies, but I like the large Angels more. I will just have weigh everything out and go from there.

No sump yet! I had everything set up and ready to go for the 185 and...that's a different story. I should have a sump within a couple of weeks.

take your time. Getting a big tank like that costs some. get all the dots and cross all the t's. I had plants in mine for a while. I even put a tv in mine, check got pics. no rushing this.
its part of the house now.

I think it will be 3 weeks minimum before it sees saltwater. I have everything except for a sump. It helped a lot that this one is not too much bigger than the 185, and I overbought filtration components for it. Everything is capable of running this one easily.

I have finally decided on water flow/ filtration for this tank. I researched and talked to others about doing only a closed loop, but I just don't feel it is the right path for me. Main reason is, I want to run a bio pellet reactor on the tank and it would be much easier with a sump.

The tank should be wet by next weekend. Just need the sump to get here and everything is good to go.

you can do both sump/refugium with a pellet reactor and closed loop, I run mine that way, I have 00 power heads in the display.
Ill be running a mag18 for return and for the pellet reactor and a reeflo snapper/dart hybrid for the closed loop.
either way , with or without the closed loop, you will have an awesome build.

I most likely will do both. I was originally considering just the closed loop and nothing else, but decided to use a sump. I may do a smaller build after this one with a closed loop only to feel it out.

Here is a completed pic. I have balanced the rock out.

Check out the crazy way I had to do the plumbing to avoid any 90's in the return lines. It worked out very well as far as flow is concerned.

The Tang is an Atlantic Blue Tang. The picture does not do him any justice at all. He eats pellets, flake, frozen and nori. Just put him in yesterday.

Dude, that looks amazing! Nice plumbing work, crazy, but you pulled it off. Were you trying to avoid using 90's on your return? I've been thinking about doing the same thing when I start my build.

That is exactly what I was doing. No 90's. I originally had 90's in there and was not happy with the flow so I changed it to 45's and the difference was insane. I had to valve it back a bit after the change. A ton of flow gets lost in those 90's. I also kept the return 1 1/2" out of the pump and all the way through the "Y" then went to 1" for the ball valves and maintained that all the way to the bulkheads which are 3/4".

It does look very crazy, but is much more efficient.

Cool, I'll probably do the same then. It does look crazy, but it's clean at the same time. I like it.

It will make your return more efficient, that is for sure. The blue marks are so I could line it up properly outside when I was gluing it together.

Yeah I figured that out. I never would have thought to mark them like that. I guess that's why all my hard plumbing turns into a nightmare Rube Goldberg machine. :)

Looks better than it did when I saw it the other day... I never thought of eliminating the 90's for efficiency. Great idea! Now you have me thinking of re-doing my plumbing. Nice work!

The concept made such a difference that I thought about re-doing the drains as well. It's just more work though. "It ain't broke so I ain't gonna fix it" LOL

Thanks! I wish I had a better camera that could actually capture his true color. He is kind of a mix between blue and violet with bright blue accents on his fins. About 6" also and very peaceful so far.

The 6" is just the length of his body. Probably 7 to 7 1/2" with the tail. I didn't really want to get one that big, but he was very healthy and eating very well. Got him from Water World. It was my first trip to Water World in NB. Very nice store! Wish it was closer to me.

Awesome plumbing pic. what external pump are you using and what size hole did you drill the acryllic for that pump?

sdunn90fowlr
Tue, 2nd Jul 2013, 08:25 PM
Using a Reeflo Dart/Snapper Hybrid. I drilled for a 2" bulkhead, i believe it was a 3" hole. The turn over appears to be right where I wanted it to be. Sufficient flow without causing turbulence in the sump. The final output is through 4, 3/4" locline hoses. May switch to the flare nozzles to spread the flow more.

I really like the Reeflo pump. Huge GPH and almost totally silent. This is my first one from them and if it holds up as well as the reviews say, I am sold.

Just an update for anyone interested. I rarely come on the site anymore but am glad to update that the tank is running smooth. After a while of having it up, I really like the acrylic over glass. More caution must be taken when cleaning, but the clarity and insulating properties are far superior.

Everything has come together as a little eco-system requiring very little effort on my part. I am spending about 20-30 min a week on maintenance.

Fish coloration is great and all are getting along great. I even put 2 Sargeant Majors in and they have gotten pretty large (grow very fast). They get along great with all other species and rarely have an issue between themselves either. I attribute this to the length of the tank and not overcrowding.

Fish list:
Purple Tang
Lavender Tang
Yellow Tang
Large Clarkii Clown
Keyhole Angel
Tribal Benny
Blue Spotted Puffer
(7) Blue/Green Chromis
(2) Sargeant Majors
Damsel, 4 stripe
