View Full Version : Wet Acrylic frag racks, rubble boxes etc.. rusting magnets?

I received a message from a customer that their rack rusted.

If you have any Wet Acrylic products, please make sure the magnets are not rusting. This can happen if the magnets are chipped or cracked. They all have a protective coating on the wet side magnets which is why they are black, but if they become chipped or cracked then there is no protection against Saltwater.

Same goes for anyone that builds their own magnetic racks or whatever, check your magnets.

If for any reason you have an issue with a Wet Acrylic product just let me know and I will order some replacement magnets for you.

Mr. Cob,

I am new to the hobby, and wondered what the cost was for a complete rack?

Thanks

Hey there, I'm not doing custom acrylic any longer. I have a couple of racks available on my site. Honestly I had planned on manufacturing the Wet Acrylic line but not sure right now. I'm not liking the magnets as evident in this thread. I'm sure I will come up with something but really focused on clownfish right now. I own trademarks to the Wet Acrylic name and designs so hate to not do anything with the product. We shall see.

Ours rusted and marked the glass also but just threw them away. Now I just have Loraine holding the frags against the glass. HAHA jk

i have your 9 or 12 hole rack dont quite remember the number of holes, the magnets on the wet side chipped and got rusted, i believe the magnets are attached to the racks, how do you change them out?

Mr Cob

The magnets are glued to the acrylic so they come out pretty easily with a nice knock from a screwdriver and hammer...use a towel. Be careful not to crack the acrylic.

I will replace magnets for everyone for free. I do not work with acrylic, nor am I manufacturing Wet Acrylic so if you bust them up then you are on your own.

When I get magnets in I will let everyone know. Will order some later this week when I get an idea of how many people need some.

As mentioned in the other thread the magnets are on backorder from my overseas supplier. I may just order through another vendor though, depending on how many others I need to order.

Anyone else have issues with the magnets? If they get chipped...they rust.

*IMPORTANT*
If the magnets get chipped or even slightly scratched they should NOT be used in saltwater.

If the magnets rust they should NOT be used in saltwater.

I hope you do some more acrylic stuff! I would like to see all the things you offered at one time! I assume you made the frag tank I bought? I got it all sealed up...I've seen some of your work...you do a great job!

Thanks, Ryan. I don't personally work with acrylic though. I had a few partners back in the day who are also good friends.

When we get the Wet Acrylic line going again it will be manufactured.

I need magnets

Hey Cornelius, please clarify...do you just want some magnets or do you have a Wet Acrylic product with rusted magnets?

If you have a product, which one? Just want to make sure.

The solution is a thicker plastic coated magnets... the problem is finding them large enough with the coating without changing the design and hole sizes.

We rolled out a ton of Wet Acrylic products using the thicker plastic coated magnets for the wet sides but the problem was that they were too small and not strong enough for most tanks.

I have an overseas supplier that can custom make 1/2" x 1/2" thick black plastic coated magnets however it takes months and months to get anything from them.

I was hoping to get those in to supply a longterm solution for everyone but it's looking like I may have to just order within the states and provide the replacements of the same magnets used before.

Thanks for everyone's patience and understanding.

AS A REMINDER... *the wet side magnets can and will rust if the black coating is scraped in anyway... do not use if you see silver at all*

I have pretty much given up hope on the overseas supplier. Today I started looking at local options and to my surprise EVERYONE is out of stock on the 1/2" x 1/2" Neodymium epoxy coated magnets.

I did however find 1/2" x 5/8" epoxy coated magnets but they aren't cheap and if I do get these as replacements I'm not responsible for broken fingers or glass. :0

Chris is this the size your custom corner racks have?

We have decided to start Wet Acrylic back up and have solved the rust issue. Our new wet sides will be encased in acrylic and are stronger. We have decided to offer $10 off the purchase of new racks and rubble boxes which is more than the cost of the magnets that rusted. Turn your rack in for $10 credit towards a new rack.
