Ive noticed a couple of my big colonies have lost some tissue in centers and shaded areas, couple have gone bone white in those areas. i figured it was just an adjustment but after reading this article i will be watching a lil closer.

Hybrid 1: Keep the LEDs tightly clustered with optics, but throw in some T5. The LEDs would add a lot of PAR, while the tight cluster would create an attractive glimmer without disco colors. And the T5 provide a distributed light source to fill in any harsh shadows. Electricity and heat would still be in the efficient range.

Exactly what I got going on..... And I like it.

Thought about this:

Hybrid 2: Bring back the metal halides, but at lower wattages. Then supplement with a barrage of blue LED. The LEDs would replace the usual T5 Actinics. Heat would be greater with halides, but it would overall still be an efficient approach for larger tanks.

my units with 2 150 watt MH in between..... Would be awesome.

My Zoas, they prefer the MH rather than the LED.. With MH's they were flat against their surfaces, on the sandbed as well as the wall and vibrant with color. With LEDS, they lost lots of color and were extending towards the light as if it was not enough.. even lost a great deal of the ones that were growing on the back wall.

I had to put MH back on and everything is coloring back up.

what led fixture where you using? emily seems to have good luck with her previous fixture and the radion now on her cube, her tank is mostly zoas?

Now I'm going to be watching my coral.

I haven't really noticed much in the way of loss or lightening of colors. My zoas are all pressed up against the rock, the only ones that seem to be reaching are my Armor of the God... or a God... you know, the AOGs.

I had to move my lps around because they were fading out quick, and the acans I almost put in the shade so they weren't receiving the full barrage of light.

Dude, my AOG's also reach. I even put them at a point where were getting ridiculous PAR. I think they may just be that way.

I thought that's what palys did?

my aogs reach but look awesome IMO, and these rare fairy dust palys do the same... I have bleached sps right next to them but they still reach.....

Specifically about AOG zoas. Mine are flat against the rock and I run T5s. Sounds as if they are not fans of LEDs?
This thread has my thinking of maybe not switching over to LED although I realize what works for one may not another..

My aogs have always reached, even under MH. I don't think I had them when I was on T5.

I'm genuinely pleased with the way things are doing under led. Not sure, but it seems that things are growing slower.

The growth in my frag tank has exploded since I put an led fixture on it. Color has never looked better. I did switch it from t5's so not sure where that falls. My only grip is now I can't seem to get a decent picture of my zoas/palys. They all look all washed out in the pics
