That's per night JT. There are other places around though this place is nice. Also, if you notice most of those listed are suites so you could shack up with some one to help a little.

Those prices should be total. I looked up their website and it seems to be similar to a weekend stay total. Not a per day rate. I could be wrong though.
allan
Wed, 10th Apr 2013, 05:57 PM
Yeah, perhaps. The holiday inn around the corner calls in at $189 a night during the summer months. It would t surprise me if these were $250 per night.
I can drop coin at $250 for a weekend, but not at $500 for the weekend.

Sorry everyone, The listed price is Total for the two nights. I have updated the post.
You are free to stay where you want. This is just a central location for meet up and activities.
We have stayed in four different hotels/condos in Port A and this place has nicer rooms.

I'm a little confused. I'm thinking about attending with my wife and two kids. What's "hotel 1" and "hotel 2"? We'll be back from vacation in time for this but I don't want to spend $500+ for the room. ~$200 we could probably swing though.
FireWater
Thu, 4th Jul 2013, 07:17 AM
The price given was for the weekend night per night according to Marcus. There are also other places to stay around the area it's just that during summer the cost is always up at all the hotels.
allan
Thu, 4th Jul 2013, 07:39 AM
That particular hotel has several buildings. I believe that's the reason why they're labeled hotel one and two.

It says right above the prices that it's for the weekend though. I just need to know if the hotel 1 or hotel 2 price is for the weekend, or for the night.
Thanks Allan, I thought that might be the case.
If we decide to go, do we just PayPal the full amount to MAAST and RSVP?
FireWater
Thu, 4th Jul 2013, 02:01 PM
The hotel reservations red to be done through the hotels. MAAST doesn't handle that part.

OK, we're getting close to the weekend in question. So, I'll launch this out there, for interest. We don't want to interfere with the other items on the event list. As many know, we "live" in Port A on the weekends, on our 47' sailboat. We are in the City Marina. If 1) the weather cooperates, and 2) there's some interest, we can take a decent sized group out for a sail on Sunday. Again, assuming the gulf is nice, we can go offshore. There are often large patches of weed that can be of interest. In the event there's a lot of interest, in true bstreep fashion, this is NOT a "first come, first served" deal - we'll have to make choices. Lemme know. Please note, kids (under 18) will have to wear life jackets, and the only ones we have are the clunky orange ones.

PM tiger_eyed1. (Marcus)
It would be easier if you sent in your dues to MAAST before the weekend? Maybe Allan can answer this one? I know if you show at the coast and have $25 and want to renew one of us will handle it.
Look forward to meeting you, and for me I would suggest long handled dip nets, Red LED head lamp, bucket with battery operated air pump and air stone. If you PM Marcus he will give you a list of items, he has it down pat.

Alton is on target, however if that isn't feasible (paypal to the treasurer before the event) I am sure we can work something out. I'm not crazy about collecting cash for the obvious reasons.
I won't have any receipts to show payment. However, if you were to pay there I guess I could PayPal the amount in for you, in front of you. The note will have your screen name on it, which you could verify.
This is all dependent on whether our treasurer thinks that it would be copacetic.

On the LED light I got mine at Wal Mart, Academy should have one too. You can change between White, Green, and Red. And yes it is amazing last year Marcus had his on red and the fish and even a turtle where unaffected. He switched it over to white so Paul could take a picture and the turtle went ballistic.

Sun, 14th Jul 2013, 06:07 PM
Some of the most important things you should bring are Battery Operated Air pump for use during collection, Long Handle Nets , RED LED head lamps, shoes with rubber grip for walking on the jetty. You can get all supplies from Wal-Mart or a big box sporting goods store. I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and the multi function (White & Red) light they had was around $12. As stated above, the red is needed at night otherwise, the white causes the fish and shrimp to scatter. I use mine around the house all the time. My net has a telescopic handle that extends maybe three feet. It adds enough reach so I don't have to get all the way down between the boulders. Be sure to get one with a metal rim so that the net is not exposed to dragging against the rock. It'll tear from the rough rocks.

FYI, I picked up a 5 red led that clips on your ball cap for $5 at Academy today. It is only red though. And pretty bright.

Thanks for the tip. How long are the long handled nets that were recommended? I just want to be prepared.
Flyride95
Mon, 15th Jul 2013, 10:57 PM
You've got to be able to net up to 6ft away. Or climb down the rocks and try not to fall in then you can use a 3ft net.
Pennies2Cents
Tue, 16th Jul 2013, 09:06 AM
Or if the water is low use the short handed ones and climb into the cravasis (sp) between the rocks where you can fit, move and scrape along the the underside of the rocks. Make sure the net has a protected edge otherwise the net will tear. Yall have fun out there..

Heres, something that will help everyone and their shrimpies.
When you are ready to hit the road with your buckets filled with water & shrimp with the air pumps.. Do a small water change before you leave, then if the temp outside is too hot and you think the water temp in the bucket will get too hot, add ICE to your bucket.. For some reason this has really helped us when we went and returned home.
Remember:
1 (5) Gal Bucket filled 1/2 way with Sea Water,
Some sargassm (sp)
Shrimp
Air Pump w bubbler and a water change before you hit the road back home.
And ICE
Trust me this works you will have more shrimp ALIVE for your tanks.

Thanks Marcus, the kids liked the Giant Smores on Friday, and the chicken Saturday was great. Sorry Kristy and Mike I did not make it out to the Saturday night collection trip, the sun whooped me.

We got the first timers started with the what and where and how, gave them our surplus livestock and got on the road for home. Got in around 2:00 am and feeling OLD today!
We brought home about a dozen peppermints +/-, some sea lettuce for them to hide in along the way that we'll try in the fuge, and some big ugly hermits and snails that we are going to keep in the sump of Mike's FOWLR+ softies in order to replenish his clean up crew. (The puffer and triggers will get to them sooner or later but this will give us something to work on the leftover bits til then.) oh we also snagged one small rock flower anemones.

Marcus you are the master of the grill! Thanks so much for putting together the cookout! It was great to visit with everyone. Appreciate all the coordination, BOD!

It was nice to met everyone and be able to put some names with faces. I gave away a couple dozen Peppermints and lost count of how many I have for myself. I would guess around 2 dozen. I also scored 3 Bleenies 11 SGT Major Damsels. I also brought in around 15 snails and 9 Hermits which are tapping around in the barebottom tank behind me. The wind was rough on the equipment and I have major sunburn action but a good weekend overall. Thanks to the guys who worked the grill in the heat so the rest of us could relax. Could anyone tell me if those Coastal Blennies are reef safe?

Hit or miss on the reef safe with the blennies and sometimes the peppermints. Shout if you want to get rid of the coastal hermits. They usually get too big and are probably not reef safe either. Was good to meet you and glad you had fun this weekend.

I collected Molly miller blennies a couple of years ago. All of them behaved well at first, but slowly each of them gave into the irresistible urge of nipping at corals and clams. They're really neat fish (I like their Mohawk) but in my experience they'll turn on coral or clams. You mileage may vary.

Sound like you guys had a blast. I really wanted to go but we just for back from vacation and we were out of fun money and I was exhausted. Next year though! Did you guys take a sane net out near the jetty at all? That's one thing I've wanted to do but haven't. I have a huge sane net collecting dust in the garage that will be used for this purpose!

I had one but was concerned about snagging and ripping it on debris and rocks.

I only have zenia, mushrooms, and palys with a few zoos thrown in. Are they rough on softies?

Thanks, likewise. I will keep ya in mind on the hermits. I may not use them. I will put Peppermints and some Blennies in my tank if they are softy safe but I will probably unload the hermits and trade some peppermints for some zoo polyps or something. I would like to gather some small frags if anyone does some fragging. I like small frags 4 or 5 polyps even. I want to add some colot to my tank.

I'm going to trade some of my extra stuff for small frags.I'm not picky. A few polyps of a zoa on a rock or in a ziplock would be cool. Let me know what you have to trade.
