Why do they brown up like this?
Too many issues to start explaining. Lighting and water quality are the two main culprits.

Your right. I went to go look at them under the blue LEDs. The sps is green and I see an orange dot.

Another issue of brown sps is too white of light, too much intensity, too long of light cycle. Not saying you're doin anything wrong Shane.

My SPS nearly always seem to go through a browning phase before try color back up. It would seem to me to be a leveling out of the symbiotic zooxanthella algae present within the coral blooming (browning), then settling back out to a consistent population (coloring up) revealing the natural color if the coral itself.
I could be wrong. I should've been in bed hours ago.

Its all good. Under the blue LEDs they are different with a green skirt and an orange dot showing up. You have a lot of sps, successfully. These just started growing. They were flat.
I allways listen to what you say or do so I can be successfull.

Shane, it's a purple digitata. I had a colony that was growing there until one of the wrasses crashed into it and snapped it off right at the base. There was a tiny bit left, looks like it's doing good for ya.

What's the point in that? We could all save a LOT of money if we got rid of our tanks completely.
The browning out of corals with LEDs is a common complaint. One which has certainly kept me from going there. I didn't spend thousands of dollars on rare zoas and lps just to turn them brown. LEDs may be the wave of the future, but I think I'll stay stuck in the past until reports of problems stop popping up every time LEDs are mentioned.

Sps and LEDs are the issue sherita not with LPS or softies which do very well under the lights.... Colors from LEDs and zoas or LPS can never be matched with mh or t5...

And THE POINT was to see if it really does make a difference on electricity, some say it does, some say it doesn't.... Eitherway I wouldn't know....... Just askin..
why would we give up our tanks?

Man, i don't know about all that, but my SPS looks awesome under the LEDs. In fact my Stuber has a deep rich color under the LEDs that it never had under the MH.
And the zoas seem to pop as well. Armor of God zoas always looked rather bleh to me, but now after several months of being under the LED, they are beginning to glow. And Dan's tank where he's got them under LED they are sick looking.
One thing I've noticed, and it doesn't bother me, is that growth is somewhat milder under the LEDs. Not sure if it's because I've got the white at 70-75% for only a few hours a day, but less growth means less cutting and fragging, so I'm good with that.

Also I believe LEDs and browning of SPS has more to do with user error..
i haven't browned much but bleached some with overpowering with light.... Fixed by taking Leroy's advice and trimming the burned pieces off, low and behold its growing back after tuning the lights down and raising the fixtures a bit.

I've also not heard much about browning under LEDs but I've heard a lot of complaints about bleaching under LEDs due to too much light, too fast. Did you do anything to acclimate the corals to the new light?
BBQHILLBILLY

No not intentional other than Im not using any lenses. So all lenses off the LEDs. But I do have LEDs turned up 75%. I did have them down to 50%. So maybe indirectly. lol
All the coral just started growing fast in the past week. Ill get the pic of purple digita here soon.
