Been looking and looking all over the internet for an excel template, or even a downloadable database that gives details on livestock.

Example, Common name, scientific name, size ranges, reef safe y n w/caution, water conditions, temperament, family, etc, etc, etc. Or at least the very least water conditions each thrive on and size ranges.

Does anybody have such a list or DB, or know where to get one?

Thanks Big_Pun, I know about those sites, those sites are what inspired me to go look for a downloadable database or a spreadsheet. I am sure you have noticed there are some that are in live aquaria but no where else, and vice a versa for the rest of them. I hate having to look at several websites to get the info I am looking for, even when I google it, I get alot of irrelevant info on it.

Really, I didnt think it as a young hobby. Seems its been around for quite a bit of years, longer than I been alive at least anyway. Although I know alot of things have improved over the last 10 - 15 years, dramatically I may add.

For IPhones I downloaded poto's guide (pieces of the ocean) I think they might have it on android.

but what fish are collected has changed over last few years diff laws in collection areas and better techniques so the hobby is always changing and not everyone keeps track of what is in captivity and if it thrived while they had it. reef central has some good info along with other marine forums too.

You know how there is a chart at petco on what fish can be okay with in a tank. Is there a chart for corals vs flow vs lighting, etc.?

lmfao, that cracked me up, one tang alone would be to big for a 55G :) I know that one. And your right, not as bad as a 2.5G

Remember I also have a 145G in the making as well. The 55G is just my starter tank. Rather screw up on a 55G than a 140G. Doing as suggested, taking my time, learning what I can. After my 145G is done being fixed, and I build a stand and hood for it, as well as get enough money to get it all together properly, this 55G will become my sump/refugium tank.

I like to know this one as well.

Cool well take it slow...

dont skimp where it counts and most ppl do.... Skimmer and filtration..

A well made sump that has plenty of room for future upgrades is a must......

Skimmer, one that doesn't just handle your bioload... But that will handle your load when you add more and more live stock.... Most ppl forget that fish and corals poop.... Lol just cause your tank is lets say 100, and your skimmer is rated for 100 doesn't mean it will work efficiently on a well stocked tank..... A skimmer rated at 150 will do a better job... IMO..

I think this 55G would make a plenty big enough sump. Honestly it seems like it is bigger than a 55G. It had some water in it when I picked it up, about 25% full, and I added around 35 more gallons to it to make it full. So it looks bigger, but I think its around the 55G mark. Have not done the measurements and conversion of volume just yet, but will need to so soon, before I start making the stand for the 145G.

Oh btw, you answered one of my questions that I had on the equipment thread, not sure if you saw it there before you posted, but thanks for that too.

Like some else said most charts on the internet are worthless and outdated and do not cover all cases. Take for example tangs, all will say are reef safe but many of us have learned that is not true. I once sold a purple tang to a person and he placed it in his tank and in a couple of days it ate $200 worth of coral. Also many fish that are listed as hard to keep are not that hard with all the new food available to us. The best way to get information is ask on this website and people will post what were there experiences.
One that I can help you with is flow for Frogspawn, the less the more they like it. Just a little current to carry food to them.
The best thing you could do is start your own spread sheet asking others questions on certain things. One person on reef central did this with angelfish and being reef safe. People would post if there angel was reef safe and with what and he compiled a list and created percentages example: Flame Angel 80 safe, 19 not. 10 sometimes nipped, one was safe until after 4 years and ate a brain coral. That to me is much more useful that what you get off the internet where it says "Reef Safe with Caution" at least with this other I know that 1 out of 5 will not be reef safe.

I ran across this and didn't take much time to go through it to check it validity. Either way, this is an extremely short list considering all the coral families and species in Cnidaria.

Thanks Ben.

Also thanks to Alton for that insight. Got an app late last night on the IPAD, its not the one that Triston suggested. I will let yall know which it was after I wake up a bit, and take a look at the app.

That's not a bad app. It serves its purpose. Anything not listed I'd still ask around here. Shoot, I'd still ask around on here. There's a collective experience on here that surpasses any app I've seen.
