cant tell from the pic, but the description sounds like a sponge. harmless, actually a good sign that your tank is maturing.

+1 to the above replies.
It is a pineapple sponge. It's a tunicate that is NPS (filter feeders). As Ace said, it's a good sign. You may experience a little bloom of them. Don't worry. They will balance out and not take over your tank. :)

And I've never seen them grow in the light... if you take a look at a dark section of your sump return or even in the line from your overflow to the sump, you will see them all over the walls.

threadsurection! I have had two of these in my tank, but both have grown out/on frags of a zoa and gsp. Does anyone know if they hinder growth of corals? Havent observed if t hey are attached to the zoas but the other attached to the gsp. So far it doesn't seem to be impacting it, but maybe someone has some advanced knowledge if I should remove it from the frag or not.

Well I just found out, I have a baby sea cucumber and he's growing very well. And he Loves the those pineapple sponges. ;)
I think their, another a source of food for sea creatures.
Markis, I think you can its remove, not going to hurt your frag, but I think it would give your frag better room to grow if you do remove and than move to a different spot.

if you see em in your zoas just pick em out at night with some tweasers. I had one pop up between my bambams and it did affect their opening up.
