What does everyone think?

99% of people enjoy looking at corals & fish.
70% want to own a reef.
40% will actually try it.
10-25% will stick with it until stuff dies.
5-9% will keep going for a couple years.
1% becomes a reefkeeper for life.

These are just my rough estimates & are in no way concrete.

Opinions?

Are you talking about people currently in the hobby?

I'm referring to everyone. From people who've never seen a reef tank to the most elite among us.

I have had an aquarium since I was 9? I can't see myself ever not owning one. As far as reef tanks, I really do not understand why we have fish only tanks anymore, freshwater should be planted and every salt should have some kind of softy which are safe with 99% of all fish. I seen a 158 gallon once that was solid GSP and looked awesome.

I've worked with both and could own either one but I like the reef keeper elite. the apex can do a lot more but the rke does what I need and lil more and is very easy to setup, I've even been able to talk friends over the phone how to program it. even the lite version is good if you don't need a bunch of stuff.

Great job paying attention, buddy.

Ive been in the aquarium hobby for 20+ years. 10 of those saltwater with a solid 5 reefing and I can honestly say that Im still learning but will most likely be a reef junkie for as long as I possibly can.

I had my first salt tank when i was 16.. so I have been into it more than a majority of you have been alive, I will stop doing my own maintenance when I can no longer get out of my wheelchair and I will get rid of it when my nurse bending over to clean it no longer excites me!

I started with my First saltwater tank when I was about 15 and then move on to a trying my luck with Corals and have not stop learning from there. There are some times where I want to rip my hair out and call it a day, but then when I see a stick or a softie that I have never seen be for, there I am back at it lol

See my signature... Started with fish in the 60's. We will likely take off for a couple of years to go sailing, but I can't see NOT having a tank when we get back.

I too have been in the aquarium hobby for quite some time now. I enjoy it and there are times it bores me. I have taken the occasional break, but always seem to find my way back.

With my scuba certification finally getting kick started I am sure that will only fuel the fire..

I've been in the hobby about 4 years. Started with a nano reef. I'd wanted a saltwater tank since I was a small kid and have always been highly interested in marine life. I don't see myself ever completely leaving the hobby. Worst case, I do freshwater planted.

Been in and out of the hobby for about 20 years. In it for the long haul with various LFS offering to clean your tank I can also go out of town for extended periods. I like all the new technology and feel I can automate most things so the tank runs itself pretty much. I still want like a 500, no 1000 gallon reef, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I think your numbers are too high. I'd guess...

99% of people enjoy looking at corals & fish.
98% will ask how much a reef costs.
5% will actually try it.
3% will quit within 2 years
More like .1% becomes a reefkeeper for life.

I could see myself being a lifer for sure. I'm scared to see what my next tank will be. That will be for my next house though.
