for my boys :)
they really want seahorses, but we cant have them in either of the other tanks. picked up this 28gal jbj nanocube from david (THANKS AGAIN!), so i thought it would be perfect for a couple of seahorses. going to use the stock lights for now, may do a diy led setup in the canopy down the road.
i didnt get as much done this afternoon as i had hoped, but maybe i can get the stand and canopy finished tomorrow if it isnt raining.

That looks like a fun project with the kids! I only have my youngest child showing any interest in the hobby, but he is not quite 3 yet. I wish they would show interest like yours. Have fun with this build!

thanks for the comments
so, we added a 4 inch sandbed using sand from an existing system (well rinsed with discard salt water). then a water change on the big tank provided the water. moved a little live rock from the big tank as well as some duplicate gorgonians, gsp, anthelia, orange zoas, and a baby orange carnation that is reproducing in the big tank. i also added a strip of blue leds to the light fixture to give a little better color to the pc lights. we picked up a yellow male H. erectus and a black female H. erectus from AD and they are happy as can be. the boys want to add pipe fish and some other things as well, this is where their patience will be tested a bit as i dont want to add too much at once.
water is still clearing - yes, the boys insisted on a pirate ship in their tank :)

Yay! seahorse tank!
I have had the best success with CB ones from:
seahorse.com
or
southwatchseahorse.com
I currently have Erectus from both of these companies. Southwatch is more economical , but the Oceanriders are well worth the investment. VERY hardy seahorses. They even compete for food with other fish. I had them in my reef tank for a while, but they do bet by themselves. Beware of bristle worms, they cannot eat them. And the nucleus that the corals secrete when stressed is harmful to them if ingested. They cannot be mixed with Kuda. They have different bacteria and the Kuda is the one that will always loose the battle and pass away. You may want to connect a spray bar instead of keeping the flair nozzle on tank and even better, get a flow valve regulator attached to the line going out into tank, and decrease the flow a bit. They are active swimmers in the right water flow, otherwise they will always be a dark color (almost black) and always be hanging on to something. I have kept all kinds, and tried all kinds of setups. I have learned a lot from research, trial and error, and am more passionate about these guys than anything else in marine tanks. Let me low if you have any other questions.
Be very cautious about buying locally. There are signs you should look for in a healthy seahorse vs unhealthy.
Best wishes and success

thanks, we already got a male and female erectus at aquarium designs. we watched them eat voraciously before buying them. they have already eaten for us and are constantly patrolling looking for food as well. for flow, we have a koralia nano that is pointed at the water surface, so there is nice gently flow throughout the tank. they have been cruising around some and hang on to the gorgonians as well. the male is staying a nice bright yellow with great striping on its head and face, but the female remains solid black.

Good to hear! It reads like you're prepared and have researched as any good reefer would. These guys are the reason I got into marine aquaria. Enjoy them!
