No we tried to rescue a plate from a friends tank when it was almost dead and where unsuccessful. I read that if a plate dies you can leave it in the tank and it will sprout babies so I left the dead on in the tanks and one day noticed little orange dots all over the dead skeleton and researched more and found out that's how they multiply and they eventually coral crawl off the old plate when they are ready to be on their own

Yeah I googles how to save a plate coral and found a blog about a guy that paid 500 for a plate and his wife was so upset at him because it died shortly after that. The guy couldn't bring himself to throw away the skeleton so he put it in the back corner of the tank an left it alone. About 3 months later he had about 100 little babies all over it.

You should dig up that old link you found to the article showing all those plate coral babies.

It's an interesting read!

A lot of the family Fungiidae coral have that mode of asexual reproduction, babies grow from small bits of tissue on a near dead skeleton.

Thanks ace. There are still 10 on there and the ones in the left seen to grow way faster than the 4 on the right not sure why though I feed them all equal. Just wish they would walk already lol the ones on the right are all squished together and are about the size of a quarter up to a half dollar.

Fracture
Wed, 1st May 2013, 02:12 PM
I started off with about 20 or so but when we moved 3 times in one year I lost some. I was down to 10 until I accidentally broke one in half trying to see how big the skeleton was and that one is now 2 so I have a total of 11 :)

this gives me a lot of hope. I just bought a big green plate and it died. I had read they might make babies. I hope so. cause it was a great looking plate.

It can take a while sometimes they do sometimes they don't. Good luck and if they sprout it's so fun watching them grow
