I have a 240 gal L shape acrylic tank and a 120 gal acrylic tank with three sections in it as well as a nice sump.

The issue...should I set these up and have a 400ish total gallon Mega tank...or sell these and put that money into a really nice 40 breeder reef with Radions, MP40, custom stand, canopy, sump/fuge, etc. Then stock it with some really nice coral to add on the what I have...

I need personal opinions lol. I really am stuck with what I want to do here!

Once you go large good luck at going back to small. In saying that 400 gallon reef is hard to do, so if you are wanting the ultimate reef you may want to go smaller.

I never realize how difficult a big tank is until I start filling one up. I just can't imagine going smaller.

I guess I should describe my basic plan. The 240 would be a Fowler with tangs angels etc. I wanted to have the middle chamber on the 120 as a "show reef" and use another for a frag tank. Unsure of what to do on the third chamber.

I've always wanted to go way bigger but with me being on the younger side and not having a job I've stuck with smaller tanks.

whats your passion, do you like the look and work of a reef, or nice Fowlr. i would pick one and run balls out with it. each has its challanges but doing both would probally be a PIA. if it was me i would get a nice size reef, like the DSA 105 or dsa 190, both great tanks. plenty of room on the 190 to do big fish and still have a nice reef.

Good points there. Gives me some more things to think about. Thanks.

Tying them together could be a pain. FOWLRs tend to run higher in nitrates, which can be adverse to the reef/frag tanks. Bigger fish means more food and therefore more poop, so more waste. What goes in must come out. Probably better to one or the other, or separate tanks like us.

I'm tying three tanks together as you know. One FOWLR, one reef and one display fuge. However, I'm planning to keep mostly softies and LPS which don't have as much of a problem with nitrates. I'm also going to have 40G of macro to help with export and a very large skimmer. I don't plan to keep a high bioload in any of the tanks. I think what's been said is correct but it depends on your goals. If I wanted my reef tank to be an SPS tank, there's no way I'd hook it up to the FOWLR.
