This is copied from my post earlier on the announcement area.
We are having some issues with the server again. I spent the better part of my work day on the phone with Cartama consulting today. What is happening is another site has had a huge influx of new activity recently and this is hogging ram. That in turn slows down our site. Short term fix is they are going to remove that site from the shared server which should free us up. Long term solutions are planned as well. I was told that the move will happen this weekend.
Please be patient and thank you for understanding.

Anyone know why the server has been down the last few days? Just curious what our provider is saying and doing about the problem. Not exactly great service on their end.

No ides Mike. I was out on a mini vacation with the family. I received messages on the phone from some concerned MAASTards that is how I knew it was down.
I left a message and emailed the host company last night. Still waiting for a reply and I will update as soon as I know.

If we don't get good service from our waiter - the tip reflects it.

I hear where you're coming from, but that ain't going to happen. Even sites like Google, Netflix and Amazon go down unplanned every once and a while. I've been in IT for ten years and have yet to find a technology that will 100% prevent unplanned downtime. Maybe 99.99999% but not 100%. A lot of cloud technologies along with geographical redundancy is making it closer to reality but this isn't Google or Amazon with billions of dollars to prevent downtime.
On a side note, I know migrating hosts and having to update DNS can be really painful, not to mention having to sit on the phone with tech support every couple of days, so I appreciate all the time you guys are putting in (rrasco, firewater, probably many others). Thank you!

The problem has been traced to North Korea there hacking our system.
Seriously the hosting service is coming up short on service, I've been in IT for over 30 years and This service would be unacceptable for any online retailer. Sounds to me the web hostiing service is in need of some serious upgrades to handle their traffic on the servers.

As stated, we are working on the issue. Please keep in mind that we don't have immediate access to the resources we need to move the site, so we are working on a game plan.
Rob, in Ramsey's defense, when it comes to hosting and up-time, the jargon literally revolves around being up 99.9999% of the time, so I don't think he was trying to split hairs, he was just addressing it in the way that we do when we talk about server up-time.
I know we are all frustrated when the site is not responding.

This is also posted in the Announcement area.
As an update for all members.

As all of us know we have been having continuing issues with MAAST being down for any length of time and on several different occasions. I appreciate everyone's patience and while it might not have appeared so ,we (BOD) have been trying to find a solution to this problem. Those of us that pay to use this site have been left hanging several times in the recent past due to issues out of our control. I believe we have given our current host enough time to assist us and also to have come up with a solution. Myself, Allan, and others have made several calls and at this point we have not received an answer nor a viable solution. While Cartama has helped us tremendously in the past we need to look to the future. The BOD has made the decision to switch hosts in the hopes that it will provide a solution to the down time and other issues we all have experienced.

With this move there may be a delay in your ability to use MAAST or post. We expect this to be a short time though. I will keep everyone posted prior to the actual change. Please remain patient and we will get through this in the next week or two at the longest.

yep for 2 days. error message says used up quoto 5 attempts have been made trying to login, but havent tried to login. OR when you can type something it doesnt even accept the userid/password and then provides the first error message, saying 5 attempts have been made. OR says this is your 1st attempt and provide user/password, then again it says the previous error message 5 attempts have been made. after trying for the first time. Its allmost seems like theres a loop program running using up the attempts on the login. I dont know what the server is reporting. Does the server report incorrect logins?

Thu, 4th Apr 2013, 09:49 AM
I believe this is related to part of the content delivery network. There is a new part of it I am unfamiliar with called Railgun. It's an advanced caching system that possibly has compatibility issues with vbulletin. The IP addresses you are receiving in your email notifications about failed logins are Railgun IP addresses, so I'm fairly confident that is contributing to the issue. I have disabled the CDN for now, which may take up to 12 hours to complete, until we can figure out a way to make it work with vbulletin.
Thanks for your patience.

You're on the right track, because it's definitely not a 'login' issue, it's a cache and cookie issue. I looked up the issue and several other vbulletin sites have had issues identical to this using other hosts with railgun.
Funny, I tried to post this and it said I didn't have permission because it had logged me out.

My vote says someone with lots of time is trying to hack accounts & provide info for spam bots.
Or it IS a spam bot operating on a server out of California.
Either way - I highly recommend everyone change their passwords to more difficult words/phrases.
Example:
Instead of "clownfish1234", make it "c1l2o3w4nf5i6s7h"

I don't think it was the CDN per se, it's a part of the CDN called railgun. CDNs typically work by caching pages and serving them to visitors upon request, however, with a forum or any site that is constantly updating it's content, you can see why a cache wouldn't work very well. Railgun is supposed to remedy this and cache previously non-cachable content. I'm a bit confused myself as I have been running Cloudfare (which is our CDN) for years on forums and never had a problem. I do not know when they started running railgun in unison. What I believe was happening was when you tried to login, the cached content, to some degree, was being handed off from the CDN to the actual web server and through one means or another, your password was malformed or not making it to it's destination. This is why when you received an email notification for failed logins it would show an IP address belonging to railgun. Why this actually happened, I'm not sure, maybe it's an incompatibility with the way vbulletin works to login or cache user content as well. Works with my other forums, but we don't have to use a CDN, it just adds extra tools to speed up the site and protect it from intrusion.
