Anemone-Proofing (canister filter, etc.)

Salinity about 1.025
No nitrate, nitrite, a little ammonia (.5 ppm)
PH 8.2-8.4

Dead Anemone: Rose long tip

In Tank:
2 black clowns
1 blue condy anemone
1 Blonde Naso Tang

I just got the most bad-***, so beautiful anemone a couple days ago. Dropped him in the tank and then he moved around to the back of my tank, and I thought he was just hiding. Haven't seen him in about 36 hrs, so I tore apart my tank looking for him. Didn't find him. Then I googled a little more and opened the canister filter to find his :cry_smile: slimy little pieces (with a few small sweet color red bulbs). He was toast.

Is this just par for the course? Should I do something before purchasing a new anemone? Such as wrap some chickenwire around the filter (which will be a pain in the *** to keep clean). Should I get different fans than the maxi-jets? Wrap them in chickenwire?

MY SOLUTION:
What I'm going to do FOR SURE is turn off the canister until the anemone finds a spot, but I hear that they are notorious for moving anyways. Should I turn off the maxi-jets too?

Just don't want to do this again. This guy was really beautiful and a total waste.

You really need to proof the tank. Most important is to have all intakes such that an anemone can move off of it, if it moves on. For powerheads, this usually involves either sponges, or acrylic case (Ace makes these). For overflows, you need more than one drain. For power filters, fork your drain lines so that suction could come from the other line if an anemone becomes attached.

Do you have a sump or just canister filter? My dad bought me a canister filter for Xmas and we have it sucking and returning to the sump. Just an idea

Also, don't use actual chicken wire. It will corrode and seriously pollute your water.
