I'm trying to decide if I should light the new tank with MH or LEDs.

Here's the thing, I have a like new ICECAP fixture that is black and looks awesome on the tank. It has 2 x 250 HQI double ended MH, 2 T5s, 2 LED bars. I've seen the performance on this light and it is pretty amazing and also produces very little heat. I could use this and get close to the color of the AI Vega.

I have an AI Vega over my current tank and would have to order two more $1000. I could list the ICECAP fixture but probably wouldn't take less than $400 as the fixture new was $1200 with no bulbs, just LED.

I'm on the fence... drop a grand and move to the Vega's or go with a light that I've seen in action that produces vivid colors and exceptional growth with sps.

I dont know what ur other tank looks like but this 1 is a sexy tank you should go sexy all the way so if the aI is going to look more sexier an cleaner look go with them..but its all up to you at the end..lol..good luck. .

BBQHILLBILLY
Wed, 23rd Jan 2013, 11:53 PM
I say go sexy:bigsmile:LEDs are more fun. You control the lighting.

Thu, 24th Jan 2013, 12:01 AM
Up to you!

if you plan to eventually go led, might as well do it now.

3 of those ext bars that mount to the back of the tank would look sessy over that tank.... Going to be kind of hard to mount them if its already set up.....

or what of you start with mh and transition later to led.... You could risk all the corals by shocking them.. It happens..

But your right mh is proven, it would be the cheapest way to go.... But is it what you want?

:)

So I guess I'm committing to LEDs, I really like the icecap fixture, but changing stuff out after I set it up would be a pain. Using a trigger systems sump, and trying to get a hold of a octopus 3000sss or 2000sss. I have the 1000sss and it has been reliable and a great skimmer. ATO will be controlled via my reefkeeper.

Refinished the stand, I also add a two part lawyer to the bottom and silicone the seams, this way if I have a spill it stays in the stand. Makes it water proof and easy to clean. Also did the back of the doors, when dry I will turn them over and do the front.

I can't wait either, but it's probably going to be 45 days or so to allow me to get nitrates down to zero and some copepods established for my Mandrin. I'll slowly move corals over first on the left side and the other half will be for the giganta.

Inactive is correct since 1995. Yes my wife said the tank is like another woman in the house getting all the attention, her requirements are quiet, minimal smell, and she did not like the hanging fixture but my daughter did.

allan

Yeah, interservice rivalry. The navy is the one branch that seems to have held on to all of its traditions which is more than I can say for the Army... And the Air Force has t been around long enough. The Marines, of course, is a sub component of the Navy. So any compliment to the sailor is also a compliment to the Marines.

I had a Chief Petty Officer that worked for me back in my enlisted days that was about as predictable as a tang that's not supposed to eat coral.

And got locked up by a CWO 5 while in combat that I had called Chief. Never made that mistake again.

I picked up this LED light to light the area in my sump from Costco for $29. I can create disco lighting in my sump, LOL. I also installed the Vega's and rails just waiting on two rails I ordered from Salty supply, (Ben if you have the new AI rails I'll get them from you, if not I'm going to go with the Vega rails to give it a clean finish. Also included a picture of the Reef Octopus biopellet reactor with the pump in the bottom.

I picked up some Dr. Tim's at Elegant today to seed the biopellets as well. I've had it setup for two weeks and biopellets for maybe two days now. No amonia, Nitrites were high, Nitrates were 5 ppm. As soon as I get it down to all zeros I'll be ready to start moving livestock and corals. Going to take it slow as eventually I'll put the blue giganta in the tank.

Anyone have tips on a good coral dip that will kill any/everything except the coral? I have a white stringy sponge that I don't want following me to the new tank.

Mon, 18th Feb 2013, 08:58 PM

I always wanted a little herd of Helfrichi, 6 of them and 5 purple firefish. Unfortunately my exquisite decided to make a leap from the tank to the floor and I didn't catch him in time. I think I'm going to add a screen over the top to prevent this in the future I know it takes away the look of the rimless but I really dislike losing any animals in my reef.

Cleaner is eating a little and has a perfect little cave he likes to hide in and poke his face out of. He's eating a little brine and also rotifers.

I'm going to have to rearrange a little for the clams as they're huge.

Eric, I have that same turf algae and was thinking about washing the rocks outside of the tank in a 50/50 water/peroxide mixture. At what levels did you dose directly to the tank? What kind of time frame did it take?

I dosed at 5 ml for 1 week daily and upped it 5ml per week until I reached 15 ml per day. I also added some sea slugs/10 turbo snails and upped my magnesium to 1400. It did take close to 3 months but it appears almost all is gone now. You also can up the peroxide to 1ml per 10 gallons but I wasn't that brave. I do dip corals and rocks especially ZOA's in straight peroxide to rid it of algae and flatworms which works exceptionally well. If a new frag even looks like it has some type of algae it gets a dip.
