I'm new to the hobby and I was wondering if I could get some help on buying a refractometer and which brands are the best or come highly recommended and if there are any of the LFS that might carry them.

I bought mine for about $35-$40. No need to buy the more expensive models. As long as you can read the scale and calibrate it, then it's a million times better than a swing arm hydrometer.

In the sponsor section there an "ask a sponsor" section and they can chime in if they have them in stock.

I bought the cheapest one on ebay, $25 and it's been perfect.

Japanese deepwater covers quite a few color variations. If you have one in mind, post a pic. Many of our members have really great stuff they may be able to frag.

I have a jbj and its garbage.... Always needs calibrating...

i honestly like my hydrometer better, not as much of a pita as the refractometer...

aslong as u rinse it with water after each use, you will be alright..... If something looks out of whack then I pull out the pita refractometer......

I do. I have 5 or 6 different color combos of the un-named you can pick from. Then there are the named ones: la lakers, ring of fire, watermelon. There's others but I can remember at the moment.

I have a JBJ and it works just fine. I just got done calibrating it using calibration fluid and it was 0.001 off which is not bad since I haven't calibrated it in 3 years. The calibration fluid is 1.0264 and the refractometer read 1.025, RODI water had a reading of 1.001. I had a hydrometer for about a month when I first got into the hobby and it was way off. A refractometer is worth every penny and one of the most important things you can have IMHO. Get calibration fluid and some RODI water to calibrate it and you're golden. You can also get digital refractometers for around $100. I've never used one though.
