I'm sure this is a newb question but does anyone have any ideas on what these brownish spots may be? The other head is doing great but the one to the right is not so hot... Any ideas on how to bring it back?

I'm not 100% sure but, it looks like it is dying and that's brown jelly. Can you suck it off gently with turkey baster?

If it is brown jelly, remove it to a quarantine tank and attempt to let it heal there. Brown jelly can and will travel and infect other corals. I'm not trying to scare you. Just my observation.

I tried to blow it off with a baster but it didn't budge. I think it is the color the head is turning. It hasn't looked the greatest since i got the frag but hasn't gotten any better or worse for the past few months. Here is a clearer pic.18306

Ok. Good deal. Don't know what else to think unless something is aggravating it.

Maybe ill try moving it higher in the tank.. its close to the bottom right now. Its pretty far away from everything too. the closest thing is my bubble tip anemone and that's about 6" away.

Is it in direct or high flow? I doubt the location is the issue. The candy cane next to it looks fine. I'm referring to pests or fish bothering it.

I'd say its in a med flow area. and there's nothing that I've noticed messing with it either..

Candy cane has tentacles that come out to grab food. Check to see if you get tentacles to grab food.

It's the 4s. I'm still not sure I care for the styling of the 5. It has considerably faster Internet though.

That pic has my vote for POTM ! but no the head with the brown spots on it is not putting out its tentacles to feed. As far as the head on the left side I have had no problems feeding it..
P.S. Ive got one of the iphone 5's and love it !

I've seen that type of browning before on LPS. Normally it's because much of the water has been expelled from the head of the LPS due to some aggravation from other tank species or just not happy. If nothing is done to correct this normally the exoskeleton will start to come through the injured part and be exposed and soon die. I would suggest doing one of two things, one is move entire piece to new location. Other would be break off the injured branch and place somewhere else relative to water column that it's currently in. Just by the look of the pic, it could be direct water flow passing directly into that head not sure, can't tell too much from the pic.

The water flow is moving from left to right (relative to the picture) so there is no direct flow going straight into the head. They used to be up on the top level of my rock work and flow was quite heavy there. Since then I have moved them down to the bottom level of the tank where the flow is moderate. Since I have placed them lower in the tank the exoskeleton has started to disappear more but it has its good days and bad days.. Should I try moving them to an even lighter flow area? Or are there any dips that may help nurse it back to health?

I don't know why you bought it either. Maybe you should give it to me, I'll show it some love, and not neglect it ;)

As far as the cane goes. I would move it further down, and into a lot less (like almost none) flow. It will probably heal if its just given the chance.
