"Tang police, what's your emergency?"

"I have two decent sized tangs, one yellow, one sailfin. I'm breaking down my 185G and want to house them by themselves in either a 40G breeder or 55G tank for a couple of months, will this violate any tang laws? My other option is to pay some reefer to house them for me for a couple of months."

You fill in the rest:

Not necessarily

I have seen plenty of tanks through out the years housed in tanks 3-4 ft which were doing perfectly well as far as health is concerned. If temporary with these species I would say if the husbandry skill is their go for it. Now with that said, I would think the initial move from a large aquarium to the small will induce stress which will possibly cause sickness but it may be temporary.

Why not sell and buy another pair later when the new tank is up and running?

What are ya doing with the 180? I would love to bring them in to the 6ft tank but the other 4 tangs I have would attack them. not good.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'm really torn on what to do. Selling is an option but I really love these guys, they're basically a pair and have been together for a couple of years. But I haven't ruled selling them out yet. This is why I wanted opinions!

I'm going to move it into our new fish room (used to be the dinning room haha) and set it up as a FOWLR.

How soon are you going to do this? I need to get an oveflow for this 8ft tank and I will fill her up with sw.

Probably around 2-4 weeks. I have some stuff I need to get done before I can completely break it down.

As allways I guess it depends on the size. Ive seen a yellow tang at Scream311s house that made his 8ft tank look small.

Definitely go by the fish not the general rule. My tank is a 4 footer with a yellow and a large blue hippo and both are happy and unstressed.

Lol your 4fter is taller than a 180 and same width. He was going to take them from a 180 to a 40 breeder or a 12 inch wide tank with the 55.
If you wait and tangs get stressed and sick nobody will take them. Hopefully they will be fine as it is temporary.

93x24x24 and lot of OT. lol I have owned many tanks and I remembered I had a tang in a 75 after being in a 135. The tang eventually got ich and I could not help it.
I treat fish as family.:bigsmile:My opinions are shared through my experiences. Because other people experience things differently, I allways respect and listen to everybodys opinions.

Lol, you're right but I've read threads on other forums who would condem me for having them because they believe length is more important then the other two dimensions.

Im using 4 tangs in a 6ftx2ftx18in. So I have to have 6ft because they all need their cave to sleep in.
Some tangs are for sure more aggressive swimmers than others. yellow eye kole tang and powder blue tang seem to need bigger tanks to swim in.
yellow tangs, sailfin, hippo, vlamingi need their own caves and they still use the 6ftbut are not as aggressive swimmers.

you will be fine as a temp housing as long as you keep them fat and happy and monitor them. your no newbie Ramsey I'm sure you can pull it off.

so I'm sure I'll be arrested for this one, I had a very small yellow tang in my 29 who grew to a fat happy yellow that I took to Phenomenal cause he outgrew my tank. I'm not saying house tangs in small tanks, but I think it's more about keeping them healty and happy. I'm sure temporarily housing them in a smaller tank won't cause huges issues. They do come from the ocean and that's a pretty big tank.

I kept a very small yellow tang in a 16 gallon frag tank.

Of course the tank was tied to a 400-450 gallon system.

I gave it to Milly for her dry 75 gallon tank.
