I've never used mud, but I keep as follows... My sump setup w a sac 302 skimmer in the inlet chamber which i can put a hang on 100 micron sock when I do tank maintenance, I also run my Dual BRS reactor pump there, in the middle chamber I keep live rock rubble for the copepods I've seeded in past, as well as cheto, I turn on my cheto light after my tank lights go out and in the last chamber just added a kalk drip.....

If you really want your pod population to explode. Get a culture of sand from a few fellow reefers and put it in your fuge, you will only need an inch or two. Just feed your fuge 10ml a day of some good quality (phyto) Nannochloropsis and watch your pod population grow. This has worked for me, I will bet you a bottle of phyto it will work for you as well;)

very true. I started feeding a good phyto past 2 months and the other day I was laying looking at my fuge(bare bottom) I could see clouds of pods and other things. pretty cool
