I am new to this I put in a sump tank yesterday with a overhang flow box. How do I feed my fish without the food just going into the box. Do I shut something off before feeding.

shut off the return pump. when you restart the overflow should start syphoning on it's own.

Make sure to monitor your sumps water level. The return hose might drain a decent amount back down to the dump from the main tank area.

I have never turned off the return pump to feed and have never had food escape down the overflow. Don't know if its just positioning of flow within the tank or if my fish are just that fast at eating. :) So, I would say try to feed with it on before you turn it off and see what works for you.

It depends on what your feeding. If your feeding thawed frozen, it'll sink. If your feeding flakes or floating pellets, they will float. Obviously floating food will allow the overflow box to do what it does best, surface skimming.

Well, that may explain why I don't have a problem. I have an auto-feeder for the pellets and it dispenses them right over the return line and it pushes them under the surface. Frozen food I feed as treats when I'm home.

My fish are eating now. Just turn off overflow and give them time to eat. Thanks all
