Ok...so I've had zoas and Palys in my frag tank for a bit now and they used to open within 30 minutes of the light coming on...now none of them are opening at all and it's been about 5 days. I've checked my levels and just did a water change...HELP! I miss my zoas :(

First take a deep breath. Welcome to the wonderful world of zoas. I have found that some of mine go through cycles. They will open every day and then stay closed for a few days. Some will stay closed for over a week. Also some will close when the colony "splits" as in the polyps split away from one another. I have most often found that when they stay closed it has nothing to do with water parameters.
As go a solution I have used vitamin c in ascorbate form but I honestly don't know if it makes a difference. Sometimes a dip in an iodine solution will help. I would hesitate to change a large portion of your water unless u are pretty sure that that is the problem.

Well I doubt it could be any of those too..... But then again I had a damsel of all my fish picking at mine.

doesnt anyone learn to run a tank before setting up a frag tank anymore!
Zoas are weird they close up for a day or two then open up for no real reason, plus im sure the tank is small so fluctuations in temp and parameters happen fast, thats why frag systems are usually on bigger scale, small ones are for displaying at frags swaps.

Tactful much, Chris?
Hey blue,
Chris is right, everyone is. I wouldn't sweat it just yet. Especially if your parameters are on target.
I would also be concerned about how long this frag system has been set up.

I'd soften it up a bit. I don't think I've ever been anywhere where an individual comes on board to be beaten up by the resident expert.
I believe that we all agree that your information was on target, but jeez bro, do you have to bash first?

One other thing I check for is detritus building up on the colony. I constantly blow them off with a baster. Any sickly looking ones I can remove from the tank I like to use a dip. Usually Revive or similar in a bucket with a small power head to keep water moving.

ive talked to manda about my view on frag tanks and even told her in past to get a bigger system instead of a frag tank. so its nothing she hasnt heard from me.
if she feels threten she has my number and we can discuss it privatley.

She's got thick skin;) Amanda came over for a while yesterday and we all had a nice long chat about ups and downs in this hobby (and about how special Boston Terriers are). Some of my zoas in the 20 are going through a swing. The frag that was all closed up in my 20 (the ones in front of the acid stars..hard to remember, I know) are my whammin melons, and they have been that way for a couple of days. My other zoos will do that once in a while as well. I let them have their moment and then they open back up after a couple of days. It wont be the first time it happens and certainly not the last. Those dang zoas can be so moody sometimes ;)

Yes, I have come to terms that the men on this site are more moody than women and love to ruffle each others feathers...all the time. They are just as bad as high school girls;)

Try looking up "Vitamin C Dosing" on Reef Central or even try Google-ing it. It was a very popular treatment for Zoas & Palys way back when. Beware though; I'm pretty sure you'll need a good skimmer. And the type of vitamin C you dose is important too. Look it up and you'll see that some would swear by it. I tried it and saw no ill effects, but I really don't remember if it did any good.
