This is something ive been thinking about for a few months now. I have had Lou for 6yrs now and he is a big healthy boy. My wife and I are talking about selling our home come early spring 2014 and once it is sold moving to Austin. We will most likely be renting a much smaller place condo, apt or maybe a loft therefor my Big Lou wont be able to join us.
he is a large male sulcata and and will continue to grow to well over a 100lbs. Extremely heathy shell with no pyramiding whats so ever. Someone once told me he could be the poster child for his species because hes such a good looking tort.
He needs to go to someone who knows a thing or two about tortoises especially giant species like the sulcata. He will need a lot of room and a house/shed to escape the heat in summer and cold in winter as well as heating lamps etc. Sulcata need to be on a low nutrient diet therefor other than the occasional treat- apples, bananas, non prickly cactus, hibiscus flowers. Lou has almost a 100% diet of bermuda grass. Sulcatas come from a dry arid region of africa with not much to eat other that grasses and the occasional flower or weed. Over feeding them fruits and veggies is bad for their health and will speed up the growth of their shell and they can become deformed.
Sulcatas are known for digging, but Lou has been a model citizen the 6yrs ive had him. sulcata are very bullish and push their weight around. If the can see through a fence or any space they will try and push their way to the other side.
Anyhow I am asking a rehoming fee to make sure he goes to someone who will care for him. If i do get interest i will be very selective of whom he goes to. absolutely no breeding him there are plenty of sulcatas in the pet trade already. i adopted him from someone in the military myself who were not able to keep him.
$250
