Fishing Trip

Hola folks check out my last two fishing trips, fishing at the Packery Channel is on at Corpus. On this trip caught 6 large reds, 3 speckle trout and 15 mangrove snappers. Hope to get back out there in the next couple weeks depending on the weather.17198171991720017201 These were caught right off the channel and was just my dad and I. Go get some!

Man! wish I could go.. the only times I can get away to go fishing are when the fishing isn't good. Packery channel is a great place to fish but the last two times i have gone we caught nothing but 10" trout the first time and ZERO the second time.. and its not like i'm a rooky.. iv have been bay fishing since I was 8 years old.

We chartered a large boat this last summer, pegged out on Red Snapper, Vermillion, Shark, and caught a few groupers as well.

Grew up pond and river fishing, but I've never looked back after dipping a hook into salt. Best fishing ever. I've not tried the channel, but we've caught fish from the beach when I get tired of swimming. No keepers.

I will be chartering another boat this coming june, we keep it light at 30 pax on a 40 pax boat. Gives us elbow room, 12 hour trip.

Next time I'm down that way maybe you can shoot me some insider tips on where to fish and how. I've been wanting to catch a big red.

Sounds good, I usually catch lots of fish at the packery or at bob hall pier depending what I'm targeting. I don't think I've ever been skunked yet, mostly due to the fact that I bring a lot of gear and if one species doesn't bite, will try for another. The last two trips have paid huge as you can see from the pics above and that's just some of what was caught. Two day total came to 14 reds and a lot of other stuff such as mangrove snapper, whiting, and croaker. Not to mention all the little sergeant major fish i netted with my throw net...lol.

What kind of bait were you using? How do you catch the Mangrove? I have not catch anything at Calaveras ( crappie wall) the last two week, so am looking for a new spot.

I fish Calaveras Jun-August and then focus to the coast til Dec each year. At the coast I use the live bait that is so plentiful there, 98% finger mullets. I never buy bait since I never have issues catching the bait regardless of where I go. Must admit, at times it does get rough, but nevertheless I always seem to find them sooner or later. Depending where and when I go, I usually put them on live. I utilize several techniques depending if I'm at Bob Hall or the Packery. At bob hall, the slip line is great for catching spanish mackerel, reds and sharks. At Packery, I make my own leaders and rigs depending if I'm going for reds or snappers. As for the snappers, most people accidentally catch them using shrimp targeting other fish. I actually target them by another form of live bait that I catch. This makes up the other 2%, it's a special silver fish that they are nuts over. After catching one on shrimp, I gutted it and checked out his stomach content to see what they are feeding on. Stomach was stuffed packed with this silver fish, small but tasty I'm sure. After realizing that shrimp is not their main diet I switched bait. The mangrove taste like a cross between red snapper and bluegill...lol. Very tasty for sure. After making that change, every trip has produced at least 15+ mangroves, each measuring larger than 10". Not all that large, but the ease of catch and tasty flesh makes up for size..=) I located the mangroves just past the rocks so most of the time I don't even cast, sorta do this underhand line release and as soon as the bait hits the water you will get a strike. Using this silver fish will lessen the chance of perch stealing your bait since they are competing for the same area. Your odds greatly increase to catch snapper vs perch using live vs dead shrimp. Anyways hope this helps, September is the month where they gather in great numbers off packers to breed so you catch much more during that time. They tend to thin dramatically in Nov.

if you ever need company let me know would really like to learn how to better fish down at the coast. I've been doing surf fishing pins but it's a chore sometimes driving 40-60 miles down the beach.

What did you catch those reds on? Last time I was down, they were crazy mad for crab, with piggies a distant second.

I always limit on specks without fail. I'm heading down next month, hopefully I've got my timing right for gafftop. Mmmmmm...
