View Full Version : Simple break through

Well, first... This is officially my 5,000 post. Yay, I'm officially a talk-to-much. :) Of course that puts Ace in a category all of his own. :D

Just kidding.

Hey, had a huge break through.

As you know, or may not, I run a single 150, two 250 and a single 400 metal halide over my tank. I have a 1 horse power chiller to keep water parameters in the green. I've played around with 80, then 79, then 78, now I'm back to 79. That chiller was firing up every ten minutes or so and generating so much heat that my fish room was unbearable after a few minutes unless I was shoulder deep in the drink.

Frustrated I placed a high flow fan by the chiller in an effort to move some of that energy out of the area... and let the chiller breath.

No love.

I went to HD and picked up some hose insulation to cover my return lines. It didn't make sense to pull the heat from the water to the chiller to the lines that ran behind the chiller back to my DT. Of course, I never got around to putting the insulation on... just didn't feel like doing anything. Wife tells me I'm lazy, I disagree.

I put the fan over the sump to assist with evaporative heat loss. Still wasn't scratching that itch as my chiller was on and off and on and off and on and off and there I was looking at my tank from the doorway because I don't care for the warm weather.

Well, last week I threw a tantrum. I said, "Dagnabbit! I'm upset! Really upset!" I then, in a fit of moderate anger.... more of a mollified sullen attitude... took the fan from beneath the tank, propped it against the wall behind the tank and angled it to the surface of the water.

What a change!

In the morning my chiller's heater is on, water temp is at 77. During the day it hovers around 78-79. I can now walk into the fish room without feeling like I'm in a suana. It is awesome. Doesn't look good... but I can deal with that. The tank room is now habitable. Gloria was wearing a jacket yesterday when she went in there.

On the flip side, my frag tank isn't doing so hot. Too low of a water turn over is causing a lot of algae to grow in there. I can't bump it up because my overflow area is already tapped out for flow. I was thinking of turning it into an algae growing area. Dragons breath seems to be growing real well in there. I'm sure I'm getting some benefit from having it set up, just not doing much in the area of frags at the moment.

Next post I will post a photo for you photo hungry guys.

You can see my Lunar Eclipse competition entry just in front of the BTA. I keep losing count as to how many polyps are there. :)

It is amazing what a fan blowing over the surface can accomplish. Ive been doing it for years and it can help with a couple of degrees of temp easy. Corals are looking good.

Why not route the chiller outside???...

Isn't that where they are to be placed in the first place?

Heeeey... that's not a bad idea. I can pull the frag racks out of there. And there are so many bugs in there that they crawl onto your fingers when you pull a frag out of there. Now that my temperture is acceptable...

Need to get with Karin and see what she recommends. There should be some kind of easy horse that I can keep.

I'm not sure, Tony, I don't believe this one would fare well in the open. I know that Mike routed his outside, but I'm thinking that's not really an option for me. Either way, dosn't look like it's an issue any longer.

Chris, I will probably get two of the clip on fans and see what that looks like. Maybe hide them in the canopy. Either way, very happy with the fact that the room is actually as cool as the rest of the house.

oh i know haha, just wanted to testify how good it is :) hard to imagine with all that stuff you got going on. does your canopy raise and lower? or is it set in place

Cool hope it all works out....

If I ever have to use a chiller it will be ran in the garage or outside.... I hate heat!

His canopy is fixed.

I have put a large box fan on top of my open canopy, and even with the 400s it keeps it cool enough. Overnight though there is a huge temp swing, but I haven't lost a coral in this tank yet. Temps get low overnight, down to 71 degrees. I'm going to place my heater in the sump and set it for 71 as a backup since it's getting cooler.

5k, ha. :)

Erik, I was concerned about the temp drop overnight, but then realized my chiller must also heat. The in line heater was on this morning.

What's 5k?

Awesome looking tank dude! Do those zoas ever mess with the bases of your acros? As much as I want some, I think I want to be the only guy on maast that DOESN'T have any zoas in his tank,

It would help, but he'd still have an issue with it cycling on and off for a good deal of the day. Mine is outside also and it runs constantly during the summer because I have 900 watts of lighting over my 120g. But, I would recommend to anyone who can, to plumb their chiller outside. Of course you void the warranty when you do so, but it does make the house that much more bearable by transferring all the tank's heat outside instead of throwing it back into the room.

I hadn't thought about it, I've got 1050 watts over the big tank and 150 over the little one. 1200 watts in the room. But now it's so cool with the fan that the room is very nice.

I've always used a fan over the fuge but running over a portion of the DT really worked a change. Yesterday I lowered the fan from high to medium.

Alton,
The base of some of the acros are bone white. But it hasn't extended past that. I try to pay attention to the type of zoa to minimize the interaction. Lunar a tend to grow taller so I try to keep them away. In the case of the stuber, the sps provides so much shade that the lunar a keep a little distance.

I've also had on sps grow over and around individual polyps. Today when I get home I will photo the base of a valida frag that is pretty much surrounded by zoas to see what it looks like.

None at all? My sps just aren't vibrant enough for me to not go zoa and lps. Todd's tank the sps glowed. When they look like that I can appreciate it. But in my tank I really need the color that the softies provide.

Off topic question.....

Is there any benefits to running a fan over the sump, fuge or tank besides to keep everything cool?
I have never had heat issues and don't really want my water to evaporate any quicker...

I always thought about adding one for the hell of it, or to keep the air moving..... Sometimes I open my canopy and I feel as if the air is to humid in there... I could just add vents...

I'd add vents. Might increase your Oxygen level to have a fan. I failed to mention earlier that I've got a Magnum 8 on a timer that really creates a disturbance on the surface each time it kicks on... right on top of where I placed the fan.

I knew my evaporative loss would be huge, and yes that did pan out as thought.
