So I recently purchased this 120g 48x24x24 and plan on moving the contents of my 46g into the new tank. So far I have the tank stand and a three chamber sump. I haven't quite decided what to put where as far as the sump is concerned. I purchased a 6 x 54w t5 aquatic life fixture for lighting. I plan on getting a mag 7. I'm going to "Y" off a rio 3100 for my dual returns. I'm currently in the process of plumbing the tank. I will run 1" drains with 3/4" returns. Thanks Big_Pun for the help with the plumbing.

If you guys have any tips please feel free to share.

Yeah I definitely will. What do you want for them? And I ended up using a 1" intake and a 3/4" return. I'm hoping that's enough...

it all depends on size of pump on weather the overflow can handle it. as long as you don't use too big of a pump your good. also if running a fuge, you don't want too fast of flow through sump.

Ok cool. Well I'll try out the 3100 and see how that does with the overflow. I'm kind of hesitant on the fuge idea, I was looking for outside input on exactly how beneficial it would be to my system.

Thanks guys (350gt & BBQHILLBILLY) I really like the footprint too. I wanted a more water volume with not so much more length.

In my opinion a fuge is essential.

How exactly are the drains set up? I can tell you I am running two 1" drains and a 3/4" return. I run a sicce 5 for the pump and have one of the drains teed off to the fuge on the drain side.

Thanks John, but what is so "essential" about them. Can't they become harmful without proper maintenance?

They are in two separate overflow boxes in opposite corners of the tank. The will be run with vinyl hose in to designated barb fittings mounted to the sump. Idk if that's answers you question or not lol

I love the foot print also. After speaking with you the other night I got excited and decided to do a tank thread also. Good luck with new tank and if you need help let me know.

Essential might be relative. Yes they do take a little maintenance, but the benefits in nutrient export and place for bacteria and other beneficials outweighs the fact that you have to do a little house cleaning once while.

On the overflows, on my 120 I have a single overflow and was giving you an idea of how mine was set up and what the overflow could handle. Like others have said the amount flowing through the overflow will depend somewhat on how much is being pumped into the tank. I didn't look at how much gpm a sicce5 flows, but my tank has no issues with a single overflow housing two drains in it.

If you decide on running a fuge you are more than welcome to look at my build thread or come by the house and look in person at how I plumbed the tank. I am not 100% happy with it, but it gets the job done.

I told Chris on all of our tanks we are having a fuge in the sump. I had an old school set up on my 75 gallon and had a HUGE fuge that sucked out all the crap and really had that Chaeto growing. Even on our 150 with the GFO reactor and biopellets, we have a fuge and yes, we get pretty decent growth.

48x24 foot print rocks.

Fuges are pretty much a necessity for a reef IMO, if none other than an extra compartment to house a critter in an emergency or for a pod-safe-haven.

I still can't grow chaeto though.

I love my fuge.....

Want to replace mine with a bigger one soon... If I was starting a new tank I would buy or make the biggest fuge I could possibly fit.... I have 2 mangroves growing down there plus chaeto and caulpera..

What light are you using? How much flow?

I typically run a CFL in a clamp light. I saw a little growth, but not like everyone else says chaeto grows.

I changed the bulb to an incandescent. Color was horrible, but didn't see any different in growth. Burned out last night so I threw the CFL back in.

About to build a 50/50 LED fixture so I can try xenia down there.

Powered by a rio 600, so around 200 GPH through fuge.

What spectrum bulb?

i was using the 5k flood light cfl and it worked like a charm...

Pretty sure it was in the 5000-6500K range. I think the closest I ever find is 5500K at Lowes. Maybe I just don't have a lot of nutrients, I don't feed much.
