I bought a galaxy coral a few days ago and it opened up nice and big the first day, but now it won't open up very much at all. Is there anything I can do? I'm still learning a lot about keeping corals. Thanks for the help!

What are your water parameters?

What type of lighting do you have? Flow? My first guess would be parameters, second would be lighting, third would be flow.

I have a 20000k par38 above my 8 gallon cube. I'll double check my parameters again when I get back to my dorm. Everything else is open and fine though. I have it in a medium flow area in my tank. It's got a single koralia nano

That's probably more light than that coral can handle. I would raise the light or shade the coral and see what happens.

I don't think it's the light.... I had one directly under a 150watt MH and then under AI sols....
I would think something is picking at it.... They don't like alot of flow either...

I've noticed my peppermint shrimp messing with it a couple times, could that cause it to close up for this long?

I have a elegance that's barely opening up.... And he has been in my tank for weeks.. Well it turns out my damsel was picking at him too, I got rid of him last week....

Cleaners are cooler anyways. They shouldn't pick at it, maybe run over it occasionally, but nothing constant like a pep might do.

Never mind that, Hugo, I've got some Primo much sought Texas Trash for the very low price of $20 a polyp for him!
lol, just kidding dude. But really, did you pay $50 for that frag or did you mean to say you paid $5?

The bane of our tanks. A real light teal, to an old ugly west Texas brown, grows out of control and and can overrun a tank.

$5 is generous maast member price.
I paid 18 for a frag that size... but I also paid like $30 shipping... so I made sure to get plenty else to make it worth while....
Still, 50 is a little steep, but I can't remember the last time I saw a *healthy* galaxy frag in stores. Maybe out at GCReef, but I don't go that way often. Occasionally small colonies that are half skeleton will pop up, but a good healthy 'toothy' coral frag is a rare find.

Polly's pet shop in new braunfels. And yeah I paid 50. I did get a free heater though.

It looked really good and healthy in the store and it was encrusting down. I had no idea how much it was worth. I just want it opened up ya know?

No worries, bro. Just busting your chops. I recently got rid of my colony for $10, about the size of an egg. I kept mine on the sand bed, looked like a very gentle flow, judging by the extended sweepers which can stretch out a good six inches. Other than that, it's a very pretty coral.

um.. what kind of heater? sometimes you get what you pay for. I've been shocked by so many different brands I don't trust any of them anymore, but some are notorious. Even my high end digital one couldn't hang in salt for very long.
Is the coral looking any better? (Did you catch the shrimp?)
My first galaxy died, I was heartbroken. Its one of my favorites, so I tried again when I got over it. I killed mine by mishandling it - the skeleton on these is much more delicate than some of the other common species we keep in our tanks. They can even get damaged in the bag on the way home. If you glue it down, be careful!
They'll do better under ideal light and flow, but I've had a galaxy grow and be 'happy' in a variety of conditions. If yours is still sunken in, I'd bet it took some damage somewhere along the line.
