Let's get some quick info on your system to get a better idea of what we're looking at.
How long has this system been running?
What do you currently have running in the sump?
What do you keep in the display tank?
Have you checked your trates, trites and ammonia? If so what are they?
how often do you do water changes?

These will help us to better answer your question

Running 6m. Have a reef octopus bh-100t hangs out of tank, and a marieland skimmer100 in sump. Lots of coral and clowns and damsels. Checked water at Alamo and they said all is good. Don't remember number and water changes every week 10g *how do I post pic off my iPad It's not letting me repost it freeze up on me

Welcome aboard Andres. Glad you found us! Like I was saying when we met, I would change out the bioballs and get a fuge going in its place. Space permitting, as it sounds like you have a large wet/dry, you may be able to get by by adding a partition and get a fuge section in there. Perhaps someone with more technical knowledge of a fuges benefits will chime in here.

if it is deeper than 1" but less than 4", this may be part of your problem. at that depth, it becomes a detritis trap because it isnt deep enough to function as a deep sand bed. you may want to slowly siphon out some of the sand with your water changes to take it down to the shallower 1" depth. as far as a fuge goes, you can partition of some of your wet dry with egg crate (light diffuser at lowes) to keep chaetomorpha. that is a fast growing macro-algae that will definitely help control nitrites. you may also have a phosphate issue if you are getting lots of nuisance algae.

also, at 6 months old, your tank may also just be finishing up with the algae cycles that accompany setting up a tank.

Do I get rid of my bio balls, that's what everyone says?

Bioballs can be an effective method of nitrate reduction provided they aren't submerged and maintained properly. Most people will tend to trade them out for live rubble rock. You can run more water in the sump effectively increasing your water capacity and stability of the system.

Can we get a pic of how you set up the sump?
