U could wrap it with 1" oak, but u would need to build the stand out of 2x4 than finish it with oak. I build cabinets and we can build it for u. If not we can also get u doors any style u want....

Awesome, i am not a cabinet builder by any streach, but a wood butcher by trade. I planed on making it outta some "reclaimed" oak. I sure could use some ideas on span without a center support, maybe a double 2x6?

The good thing about oak is its a really hard and strong wood, so u could run 2x6 along re top, 3 maybe 4 since u wont have a center brace. How long is the tank?

If I could offer any advice, it would be to build it pretty high....Well higher than standard stands.....

there it nothing I hate more than not having clearance.....

The tank is 72" long, I am really thinking a 1x4 frame with pocket screws outta maybe #1 pine or popular if funds permit. Tho i would have to have at least one support if not 2. then build a face frame outta oak to cover the 1x4 framing. I know this sounds light weight but I think it would be plenty and leave the inside quite open. Again as you build cabinets daily any advise would be greatly appreciated :) I am defiantly in the planning stages, so more info the better. I hope I will be able to start by next weekend.

I really think u need a big sturdy stand with lots of 2x4's as braces, u have alot of weight, and stretching 6' will need more than some pine 1x4's it doesnt need to be pretty cause u can wrap it up nice. Just build a face frame to cover the 2x4. U can make panels pretty cheap. Just build a standard face frame, rabbit or router the back inside edge, cut out a piece of 1/4 inch to fit the opening and staple it in, hot glue also works. I can draw u up a design that will probably cost u less than 200$ and look great.
this is one of those things where I wish I had my own shop.

Ditto what I would give for a glueline rip saw so I could make my own panels outta the same material. I am afraid the door panels outta a different material will stick out like a sore thumb. I think I will start the build this monday since I have to run every bit of material through the planer to get it to a workable size and look. There is only so much running a planer b4 your ears start to bleed. I would start tonight but i think the neighbors might have something to say about it. :( I'll try to post some pics as soon as i get started.

If only the market could capture our need to protect our ears and devise some tool, or device, that could fit in the ear, or over it, to protect one from the hazards of bleeding ears due to a high level of noise. If only.

:) I do hope you wear some sort of PPE when operating that planer.

Dude, build it higher than the little 27" standard. You'll appreciate the added clearance under the tank and you won't have to bend down to look into the tank.

16285 well here is the design, gonna start butchering up some lumber. It doesn't show all the support for the backside or bottom but this is the general idea. Let me know if ya see something dreadfully wrong <everything is to scale>

if the tank edge is sitting over the wood of the stand, that is very much like a commercial stand. in your drawing, the back corner will not be supported properly because the horizontal rail just under the tank will not be sitting on top of a vertical piece (like it is in the front). also, the back edge of the tank would need some support directly under it. i agree with fenker. if i were building this stand, it would include a 2x4 frame.

I will be adding poplar framing like the front (still 1x4) on the back for support with joist at 12" oc under the plywood and the base. The whole permiter wull be on endgrain. Do you still think i need 2x4? all joints will be glued and pocket screwed

if i were building the stand, it would have a 2x4 frame. you may be fine without it, but i would not build it that way.

Me too, ur spand is 6'. I wouldn't trust 1x's to support it, especially without a brace

I will most likely put a removable brace there. I don't want to glue that in till i figure out my sump situation. Tho i really don't think it needs one, but one is going in regardless :)

Better safe than sorry... What are the inside dimensions of your stand? I have a big ol' sump you may be interested in...

71.5 x 24.75 :) I prob should take bout a inch off of the length as i will most likely put couragated tin panels for the side holes.

Bonus!! I took my old stand outside and under the tank is a block of maple, I think. Its like 18" x 6'.
I been lookin for a new butcher block for a while now. Who woulda thunk it was in the house all along :)

Your wood work is amazing; I WISH I had your skills! With that said you do understand that you are supporting 1300 - 1400 lbs on it, right? I keep thinking once the wood settles in and starts to bow/sag/flex you are going to blow a seam and flood a room. Just my 2 cents.

This does concern me a little. The floor where this stand is going has a very large hump in it. I will level the stand with wood shims all the way around when i have just about an inch or 2 of water in it. I was also thinkin about putting a thin layer of some kinda rubber gasket material around the rim where the tank will actually be sitting. I built the rest of the doors this morning and will have to go to a box store to pick up some hindges in a bit. The tank is rimmed so i am not quite as worried as if it was a rimless tank. But as always its gonna be a nail bitter, as i think i caculated if it blew full it would put 3/4 in of water in the room it is in

shame didn't get much done but here is a pic with 2 doors in. I peeled it on a measurement so i need to do a lil trimmin before i can set the last door.

Still debating on the hood whether i will frame it up and put more tin or edge glue some oak together and do it solid. I thinkin the metal on top would make it a lil too buisy. any thoughts?

Too busy with the metal on top is my opinion.

The aesthetics look great. Will the ends be removable or are they already in place?

they can be removed with 2 screws from the inside but hopefully won't be a normal thing as it will not be real easy. thought about making doors but I thought they would look real clunkly. I am trying a couple different ideas with some metal straping to give it an old look/feel but not sure quite yet if that is the way I will be going. I have to replicate everything, cause i will be building a coffee table and some endtables to match to bring the living room together.

Make sure you ventilate the canopy if you are going to run major lighting.

I really think i will be going with a diy led multichip setup. But I belive that will call for another thread :) probably an aray of 20-30 watt chips. I like the MH but i think i want to be able to play with the color a little more. Next is the sump planning, which i am kinda dreading. I have enough room for 2 20 gallons one for LR and one for the sump and other equipment, and a 40 breeder for mangroves and a DSB.
