So I think I poisoned my fish last night. I supplemented their food with garlic powder..I ended up putting in way to much. Today my fish where dead. 7 total. Inverts and coral are fine. I feel horrible. Surprisingly not because of the money I spent on the fish, but more guilty and sad for the fish. I was just reading an article the other day that said the majority of wild caught fish do not live more than 6 months in captivity. Makes me wonder if I'm really contributing to the problems facing our reefs. I'm thinking maybee trying to just keep captive bred fish. Just a thought. Rip fish.

So sorry, but right on in regards to keeping captive bred fish and buying from shops/vendors that aquaculture or purchase aquacultured coral. That's how you can really contribute in a positive way.

....um...this is why there are FISH supplements with garlic in it. I'm pretty (100%) sure that these companies invest money in their product research and test them out before putting them on store shelves. I'm sure they wouldn't mess around with producing products that can be cheaply found at a grocery store and something as simple as garlic powder. If it were only that easy. I don't think saving 3 bucks was worth killing your fish.

Well don't feel too bad. The statistic that is never shown is the average lifespan of a reef fish in the wild. Guarantee you it is short of 6 months.

I use home made garlic as an additive... but I use fresh garlic and squeeze it. If you used garlic powder, like from the spice aisle, there was likely something else in it besides garlic.

Still, don't beat yourself up too much. I know the feeling, but we all make mistakes that we regret. The important thing is to learn from it

Yeah, you know I like the natural approach as well. But garlic salt probably has other stuff in there that's not good with fish. I don't think it's about saving a buck or two, but being more involved in all aspects of the hobby.
