View Full Version : Here's a NEW warning for all of us: That tubing for ice makers doesn't last forever!

So, just like I normally do about 2-3X a week, I turn on the RO/DI unit, bypassing the RO/DI part (just using the filters) to do a water change on the Discus Tank. 10 minutes later, WET CARPET. Since it never got anything UNDER the tank we, the alarms didn't go off. UGH.

It seems that the tubing we all buy from HD/Lowes that runs to icemakers, and we use for RO/DI, DON'T do well under exposure to fish tank lighting! The freakin' tubing SNAPS it's so brittle!

So, if any of you have this running anywhere near a light, you might plan on replacing it about once a year.

Good call Bill. I'll be watching for brittle sections.

Yeah, Cory, it's weird. It LOOKS fine. I even thought it was fine and that maybe we'd gotten a critter in the house that chewed it. When I bent a piece, it SNAPPED! Shocked the heck out of me! I guess I should have suspected something a couple of weeks ago when a section sprung a pin hole leak.

Wow... Good to know. I have a small piece on my Aquamedic Kalk Reactor because it was the only type that would fit. The normal Buckeye Field Supply Tubing stuff would not go into the John Guest type of Fitting. I hope it holds up under the tank because it would totally suck to have a gallon of Kalk Water everywhere. Thanks Again Bill.

This was about 20 gallons!

First "spill" in about a year. Alarms didn't go off, 'cause it went AROUND the stand.

Yep - UV exposure is very tough on many plastics.
