I'm planning on setting up a new tank and I was wondering how much flow I needed. It is going to a rimless 36" long and 18" wide tank. I previously had a mp40 on a 125 that ran almost at full speed and stirred up the sand. Since the new tank is only going to be half that size I was wondering if the mp10 would be enough flow for an sps tank.

mp 10 should be ok 2 would be best. just curious how high was mp40 mounted and what kind substrate was in 125. I had a 70g 36x18x27 and I had a mp-10/ and 40 at about 75% each with no problem

Tank is 18" tall. The 125 had caribsea special grade reef sand. The impeller was mounted just above the half way point. I did run it full speed when the sand would begin to move around. It wasn't a sand storm but if I left it on for a day it I would have a pile under the impeller.

I keep my mp-40 about 6 inches under water line. so here the thing with the vortech that I've notice the 10 moves alot of water but narrow stream so 2 would be ideal for sps tank... also vortech has a flow calculator where you plug in tank specs put what pump how many and then gives you a chart based on flow and LPS or sps tank.

I have a 10 on my 20 gallon frag tank and it seems like its not enough.....

I do love the low profile of it though and would rather have it than any nano sized powerhead. It might just be cause a large sized rock I have in the tank, I am thinking on removing it.

I was dissapointed in the 10's, I have 2 on the 85g frag tank and ended up getting a mp40 as well. Still not the perfect wave I'd like to see. Flippin things are noisy too.

True, my 10 is alot louder than my 2 mp40s.... Doesn't bother me though, the over flow of water does.
