If you get out where the floating macro (sargasm?) and pull out chunks you can usually catch a few pipe fish as well. I keep hoping to get something real unique, but so far, nothing.

Assuming the weather holds out - and that's a BIG if - July is often very windy - we can take folks out into the Gulf on Saturday or Sunday and see what we can find under big weed patches. We now spend our weekends in Port A on our boat.

For anyone still not sure if they want to go or not....DO IT, Tebstan and I made it last year and had tons of fun. We got more pepermint shrimps then we needed, and also came home with tons of grass shrimp for fish food. We also netted several large crabs which was cool, of coarse we set them free. Tebstan also scooped up a tiny seahorse which was really cool, the seahorse also was released back to it's home.

Ok folks, we need to know if there is any interest in the dolphin watch tour as an additional activity for the MAAST Port A trip. If you think this is something you might like, please chime in here. Once we have an idea of numbers, then we will know the cost, but it has always been very reasonable in the past.

Larry, you can bring as many as you want. I believe the dolphin watching cruise ran about $12/person last year but I will double check when I'm on a computer (hate to search on my phone). The place can accommodate 30-40 people on a boat.
Mike and I had fun doing the Dolphin Watch cruise, but we always love going out on the water. They take you out into the Gulf, look at some dolphins (maybe we got lucky but there were several dolphin sightings) and they pull up a basket trap and dump some critters into a shallow touch tank for the kids to check out, very family friendly!

We did a little searching and made a few calls. All these hotels have at least two rooms available, some more than five. I guess by the economy being the way it is, the hotels are doing what they can to stay in business. Sorry that we couldn't secure rooms for everyone in one place. Fortunately, they are all close enough for us to meet up quickly for our events. Keep in mind that the club is not affiliated with these hotels nor were we able to secure group rates due to economic factors. Do a quick review search on a site such as trip advisor before booking. Enjoy!

Hey guys, just a quick note. Austin Reef Club is doing our coast trip the same weekend, and we were able to negotiate a 5% discount at Beachgate CondoSuites. I talked to the manager and he said when booking if you mention MAAST you'll get the discount.
Hotel details:
Beachgate CondoSuites & Motel (http://www.beachgate.com/)has responded with their rates. They are offering a 5% discount for ARC/MAAST members. If we book 10 rooms we get the use of their meeting room waived.
Two room types available, condo or motel. Rates listed are the total for two nights (requires Fri and Sat booking)
Motel 1 bed (2 max adults) - $266 1st floor, $285 2nd floor
Motel 2 bed (4 max adults) - $304 1st /$323 2nd
Condo 1 bed, 2 futons (4 max adults) - $427.50 1st/ $446.50 2nd
Condo 2 bed, 3 futons (7 max adults) - $560.50 1st / $579.50 2nd
Condo 3 bed, 3 futons (9 max adults) - $693.50 1st/ $712.50 2nd
Condo 4 bed, 4 futons (12 max adults) - $1159
We're also planning to go to the Texas State Aquarium on Saturday (1:30pm) and have negotiated the following:
Discounted group rate for parties of 10 or more. The rates for a Self Guided Tour are discounted to $9.25/ Children (ages 3-12) and $14.25/ Adults. This is discounted from the standard rates of $11.95/ Children and $16.95/ Adults.
Depending on the program, the minimum ages differ. There is no minimum age for a Self-Guided Tour.
In order to receive these rates we must make a reservation ahead of time and make one payment upon arrival for the entire group.
It's going to be a great trip, we're all looking forward to it!

Um. I'm just trying to make sure I know what's going on. The first post shows activities on the NORTH Jetty. The North Jetty is on San Jose Island - and accessible only by boat (the "Jetty Boat", for one). Are you sure we aren't talking about the SOUTH Jetty here?
tiger_eyed1
Fri, 22nd Jun 2012, 10:50 AM
Yes, sorry, it is South Jetty. We are about to update the first page.
We are also trying to work out a deal with the Beachgate CondoSuites & Motel (http://www.beachgate.com/) to get their banquet room vs going to Corpus for the Saturday night banquet. We know of Six rooms being booked there. We know of at least 4 ARC members with rooms:applause:. If you already booked somewhere else, shouldn't be to late to change your reservation. This place is right on the beach. When I booked, the 1st floor condos were all booked so the price may be slightly higher than listed above.
Has anyone else booked here? Let us know so that we can get the banquet room.
Thanks,
Marcus

In short, order your saltwater fishing license before you go.

Jonelle, we always have a good mix of ladies in there, especially at these family events such as this one where the guys are more likely to bring wives. Offhand I know of our female members that Belinda (tate1) will be there and Sherita and I believe Eve (pennies2cents) said she was a maybe and Lorraine (BSJF) was hoping to go too.

July 28th and 29th are the Southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower with 15-20 meteors per hour. I have 4 telescopes and some astronomy binoculars. I would like to host a Star Party to view the shower while we are at the coast.

Who do I talk to about officially being on the calendar during the collection trip? We can set the telescopes up during the bonfire and during the night collection. I have the ability to project the images onto a laptop or big screen. I can bring my gear to project for an audience, but I need to know what to bring. I also have portable battey units so they we don't need outlets. If Donna and I host the event through our agency, Teall Insurance Agency LLC, then we can write off the trip.... We just need to be a scheduled event.

Karla,
you will need a valid Texas Fishing License in order to collect anything from the jetties. And because of the laws, no one can sell you shrimp that they collect, it's illegal. They can give them to you, or you can trade them something for them, but they can't be sold.
Come on down and join us for the collection, it's always fun, and sometimes we catch a lot more than just peppermints.

Technically you can't sell, trade, or even be compensated in any way for anything you collect with out a Texas Commercial Fishing Permit. As silly as it sounds you can't even have your gas or time compensated for the peppermint shrimp you give someone... This gets brought up every year. HTH

Belinda, I and the kids got into Port A today. I know the night collection spots but can anybody tell me where we can go to do some day collecting. We are going to be here all week and thought we would like to see what we can find during the day.
Thanks for any help. If anyone has posted this question previously I must have missed it.

I would suggest if ya have time depending on your kiddos age, ya may try to take the time to do the pirate trip on the mustand outt of woodys. Not a real collection trip but fun, they do a trawl at the end of it. Be sure the kids are in swimsuits if ya go :) You can always go to the jettys too I have got blennys and snails off of them. The sargasum has kinda recedded here latley.

I am also bringing 4 metal detectors. If you want to use them, bring a small shovel, and a container to put your finds. I have been advised to leave home the really good telescopes. The salt air will destroy some crucial parts. I am still bringing some smaller (cheaper) telescopes. The meteor shower is visible to the the eye. Kristy should have a great view in Guam.

Understood, if anyone is feeling generous I can pay for the shipping. Have a blast guys! I caught a lot of Molly miller pennies sleeping on the rocks just under the surface late at night. Use flashlights to see the reflectioof there eyes. Be advised however that these blennies will kick up sand a lot and that makes them a pain in small tanks
