View Full Version : Red Algae

Okay,
I started noticing this on my war coral rock. A red fuzzy appearance. Then it started growing on my SPS shelf, at first I thought it was cyano.
It's not cyano. I tried blasting it with the turkey baster, but all I get is an algae like rippling through the stuff. It's, for lack of a better word, fuzzy in appearance.
I got rid of my yellow tang, which was a munching machine. I don't have any hermits, but I've got a few snails. I know I'm under staffed for a clean up crew.
Thoughts? I was thinking about doing some research to find a couple of tangs that are yellow tang quality without the penchent for LPS. Maybe a Kole? Anyone else have any issues with a red algae?

red algae is not very sticky and can easily be controlled by high flow and reducing nutrients...sometimes they r lethal and can kill sps

Does it look like this:

If it is this, this is something Ping(Pete) and I battled for some time. The answer for me was Mexican turbo snails. That was the only thing I found that would eat it.

I hope it's not pink. Troys photos don't show up on my phone but I think we are talking about the same thing.

No, I was worried about Ping's affliction as well. But this is covering a rock, so that the whole thing looks a little fuzzy. Let me see if I've a picture of it handy.

Post 170, first, second and third photo you can see it starting to grow. Just a red discoloration that looks like it was cyano. If you can pick out the rock that has the war coral, the entire rock is covered.
This is NOT something that blows off with high flow. I basted the heck out of it, and it just rippled in the current. I may have to try the turbo snail... although I really dislike their rearranging skills.

I have some red stuff, which I always presumed was cyano, but have second-guessed because it is growing in one spot directly in front of a powerhead outlet and I was under the impression cyano wouldn't grow in higher flow areas. In some spots, it looks like it's plating like coralline does, so I have no idea what it is either. I have more of it on my sandbed, but that may very well be cyano.

I was checking in my algae book and as troy said it sounds like asparagopsis on its sporophyte stage. It says this kind of algae appears when there's nitrites in the tank and mexican turbo snails would eat it.

If you want to remove algae from your tank, you might want to build a ATS.
Here's the instruction. http://www.maast.org/showthread.php?70686-Lowest-cost-and-easiest-way-to-eliminate-green-hair-bubble-turf-and-slime-algae&highlight=algae

I'm still planning to get one of those UAS you guys sell. I want to try it out in my sump. Will it out-compete other macro like chaeto?

Yes, it will.
If your UAS works fine, it'll out grow chaeto.

I have kole that is very well behaved and is an algae munching machine. The turbos will finish up the job. You have gfo?

I don't run gfo...
I've got to check and see if I've still got a problem with this. Seems as if I have more of it in the little tank than the big one.

if you can do a peroxide dip with that rock it will wipe it out quick, even sps can survive a dip. 7-1 ration of saltwater and peroxide. when i do it that algae goes bright red then dies off.

Yeah, that's probably not an option.
It's not widespread, and really only something I noted in the last tank.
