Hello everyone. I as I was setting up my rodi unit this weekend. I was listening to a Reef thread podcast discussing the the leak of a tank. And how this person was prepared. Im referring to Marc of melevsreef . I followed his build on the replacement of his tank ,back when he had his initial leak. Only to find out he had another leak on his new 400 gallon tank. If anyone is familiar to this build you will know that Marc is prepared for anything. Including a disaster like this. It occurred to me that many of us would not have this type of access to lets say Large amounts of rodi water or premixed salt water readily available, to control something of this magnitude. Im an fortunate to have some room in the garage to set one up a unit. So it occurred to me. Is there a emergency contact list of members that have Rodi water/Saltwater available for other members in case of emergencies ? I know we have the emergency section on the forum. But if you get a leak at 2 in the morning. Who long before you can get some help/water ? I will soon have 110 gallons ready. 55 of rodi and 55 saltmixed. I would gladly help out anyone in a emergency situation. What does everyone think of a contact list ?

This has come up in the past. Not sure what the final disposition was, or how we felt about doing it.

I think I ran up an "alert roster" of sorts, that folks can be called to assist. I don't believe that it was a popular idea. Most here will step in to assist, many within a few minutes of notification. If it were truly an emergency at least two folks would be able to reach across the community to get the assistance to a failed tank.

I've got a 50 gallon mixing station, did a 30 gallon water change this weekend, and noticed that the water in the mixing station had left a brown algae against the inside of the tank. Not sure if that's an issue, may be my TDS. But because of this I've scarcely kept any significant amount of water in "storage" for more than a couple of days. Typically it's Make, Salt, Measure Salinity, Age 24 hrs (most of the time), Measure, and then into the tank it goes.

When we make salt water for water changes and don't get to it for a while, we get that same red/brown stuff. It is worse if the water is heated also. I always thought it created a mini cycle. We clean the brutes with vinegar water after each use to cut down on this.

I don't get any brown algae when I mix, just mineral deposits. Since I always have at least 40 gallons of saltwater on hand, obviously I keep/store it for an extended period. A heater and a powerhead are in the barrels. So, in the event of an emergency, I'm ready. Also makes water changes more convenient, so I do them more often.

A little water and muriatic acid takes care of the mineral deposits when I clean the barrels out every couple of months.

Hey mike, I think mine has the same issue as I run a rather inefficient pump to keep the water agitated.

I sometimes have 30 gallons of RO water on hand, and can help when I do...

in a pinch there's nothing wrong with tap water and prime. I set up my 150 with tap and prime just to get it going ASAP. all I did was disconnect my RO membrane and DI and ran tap through the sediment and carbon filter then prime to be sure all chlorine and heavy metals where gone. I had all my fish in 24 hours and coral in 4 days. i didn't loose a single fish that made it to the 150.

also you forgot to mention that marc was lucky to have a buddy with a spare 210.

also forgot to mention I will not be using tap continuously. all top off and water changes have been done with RO/DI , don't want to chance it any more than I have to.

I have some numbers saved in my phone for something like this. But I think I have almost everything covered here at the house.

I think this is pretty silly, be prepaired yourself. what would spring an out of nowhere leak...I'm really asking, I'm a victim. although I had everything I needed when it happened it's not hard.it's just a little more dramatic with more than 55 gallons. Just have a spare tank even if it's smaller For the time being, everything will be fine in a tiny tank for 3 days while silicone cures.

Why would it be silly? I agree that we should all be ready to take care of our own disaster. My whole porpose of joining MAAST is to learn more about the hobby from other members. But to also help others. If helping others is silly why even be part of a club to begin with. I have served my country, I serve my comunity and help others when I can. Wether in this hobby or in whatvever it maybe.. So if helping others is SILLY . Well im the silliest guy you will ever meet.

Ok I take it back rely on others at 3 in the morning for water and salt, I don't see what you serving the country has to do with marine tanks and joining this club for me is for learning and helping with info and trades not having a ton of extra water.....war is unnecessary and only kills innocent people from both side. Theres no winners in war. You have you opinion and I have mine respect it if your so noble

I know what is ,it's just an ironic lyric from a son to have, After just making a strong point on War/ violence. All I am trying to say is I am a person that likes to help. Reefermadness if you ever need my help even if its a three in the morning . I will help. Thats just the kind of person I am.

I don't think what ppl have in mind is to have extra water on hand in case others have a accident...... But if u have some water that most of us normally do, and of someone happens to have a big accident or if something goes terribly wrong and needs to do a quick water change..... Then maybe some of US that are willing to help, will do just that.....

If you don't care to help and are just here for info, thats fine...... I mean that's why we have web members after all.

I am sorry to say but the comment about Web Members is Offensive to say the least. There are many Web members that would be glad to help. Some of the Web Members as you call them have been around before this whole MAAST thing started with the Yahoo group.

Yeah, I'm the coffee maker myself. First cup delivered to the sleeping beauty and then it's the news for a bit of time (till the first cup is empty).

At least I get te house to myself for a minute.

I think one of the best things about MAAST is how willing and responsive everyone is when someone else needs help. If you look at what happened to reefreak the other day with his tank crash, he posted a SOS message at 5:36 and had someone willing to help him by 6:08. That in itself speaks a lot about the people on this board. Another awesome thing is that after being here a while you get to know people and get some awesome advice and knowledge from people who may be more experienced than you or people that have made the same mistake that you may be making. I remember before spring break when I was deciding whether or not my fish would be o.k. without food for the duration, I shot Allan a text and after a quick exchange of questions we decided my tank would benefit from an automatic feeder. 7 days later and everything was alive and happy.

p.s. Allan, those witty remarks you make all the time are hilarious. I literally "lol" every time I'm on here from your comments.

Look again at reef freaks emergency thread ....... It was either a charter or board member that even offered assistance... Just saying.....

I saw the thread and thought about helping but at the time had no RO water ready...... And I figured with the 2 or 3 ppl already offering help, he was in good hands.....

It would be nice if any new post on the Emergency thread could fire off a text to those signing up for the service that are willing to be able to do assist.

There have been times when I've completely missed the ER posting for a few days.

"Witty"??? never have heard that term in regard to me. lol

I prefer to see it go to MAAST... most of my money that is waving at me from the back end of a departing vehicle is off to the government... or the fuel industry.

If anyone is still interested I live within 3 miles of Oasis purified water store. They are open Mon- Sat but also have a outside faucet available 24/7. It's coin operated though. That's where I get my water for my aquarium every week. I pay $3 for 10 gallons. In a pinch it's not a bad option. They're located at 8373 Culebra Rd # 208 between 410 and 1604 on the north side of town. I'd recommend keeping some spare 5 gallon water jugs on hand. I know if you go to lowes or walmart they can get expensive but oasis sells them for $12 filled. Since I haven't invested in a RO/DI system yet I keep 4 on standby for myself.
