With the help of Jason and the crew at Aquarium Designs, I have added a pair of clowns to my corner tank. They had 1 SA designer fancy that Jason helped pair with another clown that my daughter and wife wanted. I followed the instructions on introduction to the new tank and they have been inseparable. The pair look so good together i'm now looking for a BTA to add to the tank. Here is the question??? Is it better to get a tank raised clone or just look for a healthy looking BTA at LFS?
Thanks for info in advance...

While tank raised are often a better choice, I've never heard of people having issues with wild caught either. I personally would buy a clone from someone on here versus a wild caught specimen. They always look better in color over the wild ones. Less stress I guess.

OK, Thank you. Next question, do I just keep an eye on the for sale forum or post a wanted. I like the idea of low stress and great color.

I never seen a clone for sale on here, and Im on here ALOt..

I bought my RBTA from AD back when I use to shop there and it has been fine, with great coloration.

I have it in my tank but my clowns choose my frogspawn and duncan over it...... weirdos.

Allan had some clones not too long ago. I'm waiting for the next set of clones. It may be awhile though.

A couple of times a year I have a clone available. I can pretty much say I NEVER sell them - they are offered in the Frag Swap. That being said, they usually go VERY quickly!

I haven't had one in a while, and did a huge water change last week. That usually works, but so far, hasn't.

I bought an awesome sunburst clone from buck27 who got it from JT here. I also bought a rbta clone from GC Reef that had a customer turn 3 in for store credit. Both are really nice in color. So they do pop up here from time to time; they just don't usually linger in the for sale threads for long.

Jack aka Rocketeer also has some nice RBTA's every now and then for sale here.

Ours have all cloned at some point or another and each time there was a very clear and obvious stressor 1-2 days before that I have associated with the cause of splitting. Others say theirs split when they're happy, but ours are only when something bothered them.

I'd say you should post in the Wanted To Buy forum from time to time and wait patiently. Maybe even describe the home you'd be offering for it. That way someone can keep you in mind when one turns up since they go so quickly.

Also, are you the guy I spoke with AD on Sunday about looking for an anemone for his "superior" clownfish?

It's actually pretty stressful on us hobbyists because they look like they're at deaths door when they split. It seems to be survival mechanism.

We sold a GBTA clone for $5 at the frag swap, so they are out there. You might post in the wanting to buy section...

Thanks Everyone for the information. This club has not changes with the advice and help since I was a member back in 08. Looking forward to signing up again at next meeting.

Kristy, it is possible, I was there sunday and that is where the new pair came from. They are doing great, attached to each other, nudging and acting like a little couple already.

Kevin if you are making a list please put my name at the top...

Chris, thanks. Please

Thanks again everyone

I personally don't agree with this one bit and it is not because I own a store!

I believe you can get a great anemones at lfs just depends on the store. If you see a great anemone that you like that is healthy and not melting away there is no reason you shouldn't purchase it at a store. We have trans-shipped anemones all over the world and haven't had an issue. Yeah every now and than you get one that doesn't look good from shipping but eventually they come around.

You are going to see more of an issue with an anemone if the stores water quality is bad or your tank water quality is bad, not from shipping. Really need to watch your ammonia and phosphates to have a healthy anemone.

If you see one you really like don't be scared just cause you got it from a store.

Very true, I bought mine from where JT was working, and he bagged it for me..... And it is still doing great months later..

I'm not going to really disagree with Louis. However, please consider this:

1) If you buy/trade/get a clone, that's one more wild one still in the wild.

2) A clone (like mine) that have been around for years are hard to beat. Mine can take a lot of abuse. Heck, even now I can't get them to split by doing an 80% water change - that used to work every time.

That above post was from Dan.

As far as clones, they're great when they're available. I know of a place that has a flame clone from a local hobbyist that looks great. The wild anemones in the same tank look just as great.

Bottom line is that picking a healthy anemone that you're attracted to is very easy to do. Look for a specimen that is fully inflated and has strong coloration. An anemone that is showing a willingness to feed is also important. A good LFS will gladly feed an anemone for you. As long as the anemone fits within these guidelines AND your tank and husbandry are up to par you should be fine.

Best of luck in your anemone hunt!

Louis

I have three.
RBTA(Sm) LFS
Green Long (Lg) LFS
RBTA (Lg) MAAST

All three are healthy, and accept food once a week. Just keep in mind that if we don't support our LFS now, they won't be there when we need them later.
