View Full Version : The NEW LE Coral Growth Contest

Well, it's about time for a NEW CORAL GROWTH CONTEST, wouldn't you say?!? :)

MAAST has acquired single head frags of Lunar Eclipse palys grown out in Allan's tank. Each participant in the contest will receive one frag free of charge. The rules of the contest are as follows:

1. You must be a charter member to participate.
2. To participate, you must post your intent in this thread along with some basic info about the tank you will be growing your frag in (size, lighting, maintenance/feeding habits, etc.).
3. All participants must pick up their frags at the April meeting this Saturday 4/14 or within one week after the meeting. PM me to make alternate arrangements.
4. All participants are asked to provide monthly updates with photos in the thread created for contest updates.
5. All participants must agree to never sell or trade frags from this specific colony (honor system), however they may be included in the frag exchange program. The colony you grow out as a participant is yours to keep.
6. The winner and runner up for the contest will be asked to write a short write-up about their tanks.

The maximum number of participants will be 30. If we have more than 30 members who wish to participate, we will begin an alternate list for unclaimed frags. Anyone who is left on the alternate list will get priority for the next contest. This contest will run for 6 months ending October 14, 2012.

The winner will be determined by the number of polyps on the participants’ colony at the end of the contest period. In the case of equal numbers of heads, larger size will be the determining factor.

Registration for the contest is now officially open and will continue until the frags have all been claimed or until April 21, 2012 - whichever occurs first.

Any web members who become charter members before registration ends may participate.

Count me in. My intent in joining this growth contest is to see what I may or may not be doing to optimize the growth and health of my reef. Hopefully learn something from someones reefkeeping habits to improve on my own. My tank info is as follows

92g corner tank w 30g sump
mix of 120w LED and 250w MH 20k
Bubble magus Nac7
RKE controller
I dose two-part using BRS 1.1ml dosing pumps x2 for alk and calc
BRS 50ml dosing pump for ATO
Hydor Magnum 5's on wavemaker
MR1 Reactors GFO and ROx8 carbon
36w UV sterilizer

I do 10 gallon water changes every weekend. I feed 3x a week using Rod's Reef food, Rod's Oyster Eggs, REEFROIDS, Coral Frenzy, Reef Chili, mysis, cyclops, and brine shrimp. I do a random mixture of these foods. Phosphate, Alkaliity, and Calcium are checked weekly using Hanna meters. Parameters maintained are pH is 7.9-8.2, alk is 8.5, phos is <.05

i reckon i'll get down on that, i've got a 24g shallow cube AIO, so only about 18g of display, the tiniest skimmer i've ever personally seen, no other filtration, cept for LRR in the back chamber. Tank is lit by a 70w MH and an ista led strip. mag 2 main pump with a tunze turbelle nanostream making waves. don't test. dose 2 part and fuel, when i remember to. i feed the maast frozen mix, which might just last forever.

Ok, the meeting this weekend is the best option for pickup if at all possible.... Details are on the home page under the Upcoming Events link, but it's the James Fatherree Clam Presentation Saturday 2:00 - 3:30 at the Easter Seals location in San Antonio. Lyndsey, we will be staying around a bit for some business after the speaker presentation, so you should have no problem if you can get there by 4:30 or so.

If you cannot make it to the meeting on Saturday, you need to send me a PM to make arrangements for alternate pickup. There will also be a Corpus Christi delivery on Saturday, so if you are looking to get in on that, please indicate in this thread and look for a PM from Justahobby for details to connect. Hoping someone will speak up and offer to do an Austin run. Any volunteers?

Please indicate in this thread whether you plan to:
- pickup at Saturday's meeting
- be contacted for a Corpus Christi delivery
- will contact me for alternate pickup arrangements

Also, for those of you who are renewing your membership / upgrading your membership in order to participate, if you could do so by clicking on "Settings" in the upper right corner of the screen and then scroll down to "Paid Subscriptions" under the "My Account" heading on the left, you will get the option of ordering your charter membership and paying for it by paypal link. This method allows me to process the upgrade much quicker by cutting a couple of steps along the way where the treasurer has to manually confirm the payment and then notify me.

If the babies are doing well and growing you shouldn't have any problem. When mine doesn't open all the way I place them a little lower... kind of like, "don't want to eat, how about now?" and they will open larger to get more photon action.

There is a trick to getting them to grow. If you paste a picture of a LE colony against the glass near your frag, yours will grow. The secret is to paste a picture of a larger colony (more polyps) than yours, and yours will grow in response to try to get bigger than what it will perceive as competition. You have to regularly change out the pictures so that your colony will always be challenged to grow more polyps.

Now don't paste a big picture of a bunch of LE, or you will scare your colony into submission and they will die off. The picture has to be lifesized image of LE, just in superior numbers.

I must be in last place. I had them up high hoping to excite the zooxanthella algae into a highly reproductive state. I've since moved them lower in the hopes they will reproduce as a survival instinct inherent in most every animal. I went straight from top to bottom. They are beginning to color up more. But still very flat. 1/8" from plug to oral disc.

Its in there somewhere, find it!.

I lost a plug before and a few months later when trying to remove a fish I found it still alive. The zoas shrunk but somehow managed to live with very little light.

Been there! It's surprisingly easy to lose a frag in bigger tanks. Mike and I would usually assign a fish to look for it.... but that almost never works.

No pics, no fun! As you can see mine are very squat. When I was looking at them in Allan's tank, it's amazing to see them graduate elevation based on whether they are shaded or not. Direct light seemed to make them squat and shaded, they would reach like crazy!

The LE Coral Growth Contest Ends October 21st with the Winner to be announced at the October Meeting. Please start placing your pictures on this post. So are we counting baby polyps, or the ones that are easily visible in a picture. Are we talking developed polyps....or little things that look like they are going to be a polyp. I only ask because i see some posts where the polyp count posted is no where close to what I can see in a picture...

alton
Mon, 8th Oct 2012, 12:45 PM
Well we can't visit everyones home so what we see in your posted pictures is what we will judge. And we are open to suggestions?

Zen Reef
Mon, 8th Oct 2012, 02:18 PM
Perhaps if we do a growth contest with zoas/palys again, we should consider putting the polyp on a large tile. In my case, the polyps are growing over the sides and are not very visible in pictures. Whichever way they are counted is all good by me. I'll stop attempting to count them myself as I'm not sure what constitutes as a baby polyp. Will there be credit given towards awkwardly adolescent polyps as well?? I kid of course.

allan
Mon, 8th Oct 2012, 02:22 PM
You may want to take a few photos, Tuan, to ensure all of them are seen.

I was told that the tiles were a no-go... Something about them not being easily placed on the rock work.

Sometimes if you talk to one of our local sponsors you can get much more for much less. Example: Jason Fox Setosa from Phenomenal $20, online $60. If you go by a local sponsor this weekend ask and see what they have to offer and if they are interested in bringing in a large colony and fragging it similar to a group buy.
