Just curious how many run DIY ATO compared to the kits like from autotopoff.com

I would prefer a DIY but do you really save in the end compared to buying a kit ready to run? How safe are the gravity fed ones vs pump driven.

I have a DIY gravity feed.

Float switch - $15
Assorted tubing -$5-7
Tupperware 20 gallon - $10
Assorted scrap acrylic for the in sump float - $0

I already owned the tools, and the even then the overhead would've been minimal. In the end i spent a bit over $30.

I've been running it for about a year and a half to two years. No issues, no problems. It's not even affected by power outages.

I rigged the top off container the same way to be fed by my rodi unit. I haven't dealt with water for such a long time :)

I'm planning to do the same, ATO for the RODI container and another ATO from the RODI container to the sump. I have been leaning towards the autotopoff.com double switches for redundancy with solenoid.

Mine are all the bubble floats. I originally started with an auto topoff.com deally but it eventually stopped working. That's why I switched to the old tried and true method.

Sounds like a winner allan, got a link to your DIY?

I was looking at this one aswell, looked to be about 75$ with everything needed minus the reservoir.

I got one in the do it yourself threads. But our plane is fixing to take off. Can look for it when I'm back in town.

I run and love the tunze. It's a lot more money though. It uses a infrared sensor instead of float switches. That's probably the main reason it's more money.

Only drawback while using it I hve to
Clean that sensor quite often maybe once a month sometimes twice...

I've never cleaned mine. Been using it at least 3 years now, I wonder why you are having to do that?

Tunze for me three. I've had to clean my sensor every few years, but that's because I drip kalkwasser and it gets a lime scale buildup on the sensor bulb.

Maybe it's because my Kalk drips into another section of my sump?

I think I'll end up running gravity fed too, simple enough and seem pretty safe.

Plus you have more cash for coral/supplies.

If you're ever in the area you're welcome to stop by and scope my ATO for general ideas. I'm fixing to overhaul the whole thing... But my main design should be very similar.
