Well I was testing my 55 gallon soon to be reef outside and i turned off the pump in the sump and it began to reverse siphon just wondering is there any way to prevent this?

Yes!

You drill a small hole in the return line just below the water's surface level. That breaks the siphon.

...and even better, drill two small holes just in case a snail is chilling on the first hole :)

The part that is in the tank or the one on the pump

the part thats in the tank. This way when the water drops below that hole it will break the siphon. you will get a little bit of water siphoning back into the sump but not all of it once it reaches the hole you drill

and yes drill 2. it works better

Heres a Pic of what a Basic Return Looks like, put a small Hole where the Elbow is that is before the cut off pc of pipe Opposite of the Barbed end
