cant believe wifey gave me a green signal on this ....i been wanting to do this from quite some time and finally the time has come....
i am officially picking up the tank today possibly...my u haul truck is booked and today might be the day......
tank specs r going to be
72" x 30" x 24" Custom AGE Starphire - Eurobraced only, no centers...
and the sump is around 40" long
has nice stand and canopy....
and buddy steve aka teeb out here local is hooking me up with pretty much all the equipment i need
tunze lrg wave box
Reeflo Dart
Deltec AP851 Skimmer
Deltec FR509 Reactor and ext ext...
i hve some more equipment from my breakdown that i'll be using as well
that is another
tunze lrg wave box
mp 40 es
LMIII with two slave modules
2x300 Wtt heater
Apex with wxm and conductivity module
ext ext...
day before yesterday picked up a chiller here locally
delta star aqualogic inline 3/4hp.. thanks to JT
this chiller is beast...i mean really big so this will get housed outside......
i hve been in a hobby from last 5 years and always been a big fan and collector of rare lps and addiction has driven me crazy..but i guess now its time for me to move to sps world and my dream of collecting all the rare wrasses i could possibly fit in this tank....
wanted to bare bottom right now but dnt know how this will work with wrasses so will see later down the road as my build starts...
will hve a refugium...
considering a very simple and small aquascape with somewhat of around 150lbs of rocks or maybe a little more...
i will stack the rock in three different islands and keep is as low as possible where it looks nice to maximum height of maybe 15"from the bottom in this way lots and lots of room for the frags to grow and fishes to swim..
will hve some sand and algae for my copepods population in my refugium..
since so far i am considering a bare bottom tank and
as if now i am planning to use both of those wave boxes in this tank along with mp40 and may even consider a mp60 down the the road...
i know for sure that later down the road i am gne hve to sure go up for high capacity skimmer .......
right now i am still debating and would like to get thoughts on this build and light.....Ati 10x80 t5s or 3x250wtt or 4x400wtts MH with VHO...
any other thoughts on BB and or anything else would appreciate...:lightbulb:

are you sure you want to go with two wave boxes? i have one on my tank on its lowest setting, and the wave is jut under 1" from crest to trough. if you want, you are welcome to come by and we can crank it up to see how big the wave will be at full power.
looking forward to watching your progress on this!

That tank has similar dimensions to my 215 gallon tank. Are you sure it's 300 gallons?
Or are you counting your sump into this?

u r right on this ace...tank also has one corner over flow so two wont work...I got a package deal from steve and wave box was a part of it that i couldnt refuse and plus in future i'll be setting up a frag system aswell so it'll come handy...
My main goal is maximum flow..my previous 180gln display that i had i was turning water almost over 150times and growth was crazy...
will work on equipment list slowly by slowly as the build starts:)

yeah, threw me off too on the dimensions...similar to our 220.
Lucky, congrats glad to see you upgrade, I'm sure this will be a fabulous build. Looking forward to your updates and tank progression. I'd go DSB if you are planning to stock a lot of wrasses, that is if you want them to feel at home. If you do DSB display then go BB sump and frag tanks.

Alright got the tank.....
This thing is beast... I mean it weighs like ton....
Thanks to steve and his buddy for helping loading it up in the truck and thanks to JT helping me unloading it at my house in garage....
Tank will sit in the garage until i am working on flooring in my living room and got to do some electrical work dne aswell.....

This is the back side of the tank...
That the only pic I can get now since I can't get behind the tank and it's too heavy to move that by my self....

Nice tank! Our 210g has similar dimensions (84" x 24" x 24") to yours 72" x 30" x 24". I think the 3x 250w MH is a great choice. I suspect you may find that you do not need all 12 T5s and could probably get amazing results with 8 (rows of 2 instead of rows of 3) so just keep your receipts if you are buying this new.

kristy i been always a big fan of t5s and this time i am going MH because of the size of the tank and since its going to sps dominate...
i am planning to run a shorter photo period via MH and rest on t5s...
so far the plans r if every thing goes right
t5s 730am till 1030am
MH 10am till 4pm
t5s 330pm till 730pm

Not too sure about the t5 ballast but halides r on galaxy ballast...
Right now I am in the process of redoing the floor at my house and after that some electric work needs to be done...
Lights r roughly around 1200 watts and chiller is going to pull around 1400 watts so they'll be on a separate dedicate breaker each on 20amp breaker and other miscellaneous stuff like skimmer and pump and other controllers will go on a third 20 amp breaker...
This is plan so far

Which lumen brights did you go with? I used the large ones and get alot of spread out of them. Ive also used their smaller "minis" on my 180 with great results as well. I dont think I could ever use another reflector. :)
I use the 12k reeflux bulbs because I liked the color of them on Kristy and Mike's tank but those 14k pheonix are probably even more popular now. You ought to be very happy with this setup.
BTW What t5 bulbs are you thinking of using?

these r large lumenbright reflectors the ones they hve em in elegant reef so alot of spread for sure...i went with 14k bulb bc it does gve a little bit of 20k look...

Nice tank, good luck with it. Let me know if you need some rocks for it, I make man-made oystercrete rock and it'll help fill in that tank just fine..=) I also posted on the "for sale" thread as well to get my product out there with one pic. If you need any additional detail or info let me know. I have some awesome shapes and sizes that would be perfect for you.

My lights r in and after taking some measurements at elegant reef we figured that the reflectors will be only 4 to 5 " away from the water and with these strong halides it's gne cook some serious water....
An yea no LEDS for sure !!!
Really know what to do or else I go with ATI PM ...
Any one with gud experience with these 80x10 bulbs PM before I spend money on them ...????

Lumenbright small by coralvue. I had one and three ballast so when I made the switch I just needed to buy two pendants. I use 6 stunner strips, and although will not grow coral it lights up the tank so I use them so I can enjoy my tank 13 hours a day only using about 40 watts. If I would of not had all that I would of gone with the large fixture that Big Pun is talking about from coral vue. The good part of the pendants, is because they are so large they dissapate some of the heat up versus all down like most pendants. I will try and take the temp of the glass tonight.

Decided to go with the same old lay out with t5s and three lumen right pendants ... Nick will master fit em in the canopy by cutting three holes ..pendants will stick out about 6" off the canopy but u hardly see it and this way the halides will be a nice 10 to 12 inches aways from the water and will gve a nice spread...

Glad to see it progressing.
My plan for flow was to branch the returns to 2 sea swirls, the wave box and a mp40. The wave box will keep most of the junk suspended, just need linear flow to help keep stuff stirred up.

So now i'll be using a wave box and tunze 7905 from my two previous breakdowns and plus ordered a 6155 for additional flow to cover the tank.....
I hve used tunze before and love em .. Maybe later down the road will buy a 7095 controller and get some nice wave action in my tank ....
My floor is almost ready besides wife is getting a paint job dnt which is delaying my this project ...
Hopefully I'll atleast hve this room finish by today and start moving the tank process on Wednesday ..

thanks for the advise i been working hard on this project and trying to do my best to make it easy....how ever i will be placing those ballast somewhere else in couple weeks just trying to get the tank running and get cycled 1st...
water is getting cleared and today it was much better....that dart pump is too strong in the display even when its feeding my skimmer and reactor so we had to turn it down...as if now i did tested all the water movements with all my pumps in the display tank with wavebox , 7305 and 6155 seems like its too much flow so maybe i will get rid of the wave box and keep 7305 and 6155 and controll em with 7305...
one of the bulk head that connects sump with the return pump is leaking very slowly so need to replace that asap other than this and that one ballast every thing else is working and running and tank is cycling :)

Both of my mp60 were shipped back And ordered tunze....I am using a lrg wave box along with 6305 from my previous break down and a brand new 6155....I was surprized when I saw 6155 in action .... These r very strong pumps and move massive amount of water. Thou 6305 is rated twice than newer 6155 but I had to say its seems 6155 stronger and definitely twice as spread in compare to 6305.. Sorry for the blurry picsWave box and 63056155I should be receiving my 7305 controller soon in couple days than we will hve some waves .!!!!!lol

true about the dead rock. I used new sand and all live rock, and tap water to get my 150 going. I put all fish after 24 hours when water cleared up. them all my coral after 3-4 days. I didn't test but all livestock is happy including coral. I had a lil bit of diatoms on rocks that had no coraline and sand bed but after getting gfo online it has since gone.

Naw I hvent done anything yet...there isn't any gasket..it's this small piece that screws on to two small PVC pipes together...I am not atall gud with plumbing and I was thinking to go to homedepot and buy that PVC glue and primer ad glue it permanent if that's the fix???
kkiel02
Sun, 22nd Apr 2012, 01:29 PM
That would fix it but you could never get them back apart if needed. You could probably put a gasket in there to seal it up like a union. Or use plumbers putty.

I did hooked up another skimmer this morning nac9 I got to hve a strong filtration ..I am not planning to keep any large tangs as if now but time will tell....so far planning stock is about 10 to 12 fishes small wrasses and couple Anthias including my blk tang....
But with the less rock work since I am only using about 150 I figured another skimmer woudnt hurt...
My equipment list is over and won't be buying anything else unless needed...
Also hooked up kalk reactor few days ago and will work with my LM111....
I decided not to use zeovit in this tank but will use some of their products as I start adding corals...like sponge power coral snow potassium and couple other but no bacterial additives..

Just a heads up if you still have your mystery wrasse- Pull him out as he will probably beat the other wrasses up when they are added. I would either yank him and put him in the sump, then add all the wrasses at once or add him after the others have gotten established.
I made this mistake with my wrasses already with my tank. I plan on getting all my wrasses that I want in a couple tanks depending on what I can get. Then add in this order- Fairies, flames and flashers(these will go in together). Then my leopards. I hope to have quite a few wrasses this time around but I now will add them like I do tangs- Least aggressive to most aggressive.

I did pick up few fishes yesterday ...
Couple 2x borbonious Anthias now I hve trio
1 large male rhomboid
Small purple tang
And large rare white band Anthia
Now total I hve 9 fishes in my tank
They r all eating fine in my system as they were quaterine for a gud three weeks....
My blk tang did some beating to small purple tang .. They both r around 3 inches ...and this morning when I woke up I saw something strange ..they both r swimming together and playing ..they continuously keep touching and waving their tails with each other kinda seems like paired up ...really never seen anything like that....
My old borb is aggressive towards the new borb also but I am watching I hope they do fine.....
White band Anthia is still shy and wouldnt come out in open and she didn't eat any food also this morning .....
Will take some pics later this afternoon

nice fish Lucky
I'm with you on getting the tank below 82...I like to stay below 80, 78-79 seems perfect. While a tank can be fine at 82, there just isn't enough room/cushion for mistakes and gives little time to correct a problem that might occur.
Mr Cob
Fri, 22nd Jun 2012, 01:37 PM
tip for vacation... don't have your skim-mate dump to another container by way of a tube. Instead skim dry and just have it collect in the skimmer's collection cup. Worst case scenario is it overflows and dumps back into your tank (which stinks) but better than draining your tank.

yea Rob when i had no chiller 82 wont bother me bc i had no choice but everything seemed to be fine....now i run the tank at 80 and my chiller bearly comes on maybe once or twice a day for couple minutes during the mid day.....once i house the chiller outside i am planning to run the tank at 77 just to please my fishes a bit more i think they deserve a bit cool water:)

It's been a while since I hve updated been real bsy with work and kinda like working all day and hvent had a chance to stock the tank .....
I am having problems with directing flow on the far right corner back side of my tank and the sand in that area has turned like an algae base.....phosphates r not too bad its around .04 so that can't be the reason it's for sure the lack of flow.....I turn up my return pump a little bit than it starts blowing sand still trying to figure how to increase flow in that area...
As for as flow I hve got tunze 6205 , 6155 , wave box along with reef low dart opened half way

Sheesh, i've got my chiller set for 80 because I don't like hearing it turn on. This tank seems to run a lot hotter than the 190.
At 77... is that because any particular reason other than the fish like it? I would imagine that it has an impact on micro algae. A positive affect.

Sick build Lucky. Seems like all of us go through the new tank setup blues. I have been buying lights from Light Spectrum Enterprises, they're 60 bucks a pair shipped. Can't beat that deal with a stick. The bulbs work really well, just as good as any other bulb, I would presume. A long time member (Minh) posted a link to that site and since then I have never looked back. I really like their 20ks, I posted a pic of what they look like on my thread. The 14ks are just a tad too white for me. The blue is nice and crisp on the 20k, without being as blue as the Phoenix 14ks. Those Phoenix bulbs are crazy blue. Above 80 degrees steady, I have heard cyano and other algae tend to be more prevalent. My controller is programmed to turn my lights off at 82.1 and are allowed to come back on after 60 minutes if the temp is below that number. 60 minutes usually gives the tank time to cool down enough that they won't turn off again. To lessen the burden on the chiller, you could always have your lights turn off at the same temp your chiller kicks on, and then program your controller to keep the lights off for about as long as your chiller takes to cool your tank off. Should keep that meter from spinning around so fast!

k it makes sense....how ever my chiller only kicks on maybe once or twice a day during after noon for no more than 4 minutes...i am using 3/4hp on this tank which is way too ovrsized....i was running chiller on its own controller but since last tuesday its getting controlled by my apex and now my tank runs spot 81 all the time during the day..at night it might drops to 79 or 80 but i guess minor variations r to the water temperature r required feels natural...
i ordered an extra EB port though louis and now every component of my tank is controllable...:)
i really wana start adding sps .cant wait to get some nicer ones...thou i am considering to add a small BTA aswell.....
i hve couple chalices in the tank right now and they hve grown nice since the move month ago...my crazy fox hve grown 1/4"from it actual size with three extra eyes.....
as if now my tank parameters r
alk 7.5
mag 1400
cal 450
ph always over 8.5 to 8.2
salt 35ppt
nitrates 35
phosphates .04 to .05
i will be no longer doing zeovit and will be raising my alk close to 10 .....
as now i think tank is running gud and should be alright to handle some sps..:)
and yes i hve a zeo reactor up for sale if anyone wants it

I really like the Black Tang, summer time in Texas is bad. Come on October! Controller is the only way to go, it has saved me so many times.
reminds me of a blk tang..i visited couple fish stores in hawaii..these high$$$ fishes r not so quite expensive there...
they were selling a pair of flame wrasse for 125
black tang for 220
bandit angels for 220 also:hypnotyized:

Thanks guys return is also feeding chiller reactor and a skimmer ... I would say its moving around 2500 to 3000 gln/h....
I also added another wave box on the right corner and now algae seems to be gne on the areas with low water movement ....
Now since the tank is responding gud I will be adding some nice sps with in the next few days ...

its been a while i hve dne an update on this thread.....just been really bsy and tired...
i bought some sps from online last month and and they r all doing great....how ever i dnt think i am getting enough par on or close to the sand bed....
frags that r mounted high in the tank hve been growing pretty gud and encrusted however frags that r mounted to the lower rocks hve been really slowly growing .....i hve got 3x250wtts sitting on my canopy and they r 17" away from the water...i talked to quite a bit guys on rc and they hve recommend me to go with 400wtts halide....
would like a thought on this

2 400w or 3?

Sat, 18th Aug 2012, 04:51 PM
so how many total inches from bottom of pendent to sand bed is it. it's about 36 inches for me and I get 120-150 par on sand bed, I've learn that it takes a while to figure what each coral likes..... about 6 months for some. I move them
around till I see them happy. I'm finally just starting to glue down my colonies and frags.

are you dosing potassium, strontium, iodine, trace elements or just water changes.... I hate dosing but have learned to live with it, basics: potassium, iodine, trace elements, along with a good amino acid it's been very good for me. this has given me good growth results.
LuckySingh
Sat, 18th Aug 2012, 05:18 PM
I dose every thing but potassium.... Will start dosing that too ..my nitrates r around 25 ppt which doesn't bother me... I like to keep em this way and never had problem with em... Potassium will usually do Gud with ULNS

5 tbs r nothing....i usually out two cups in my reactor and replace em once a month...in this pic its looks full because my pump might been just turned on...usually is about 3 to 4" high from the bottom when i replace it...my tank evaporates about 5glns a day with these halides and i only turn on my reactor pump twice a day for 30 sec ....in this way only limited kalk passes through and keeps my ph above 8 all the time..
Great tank man!
thanks
