I'm soooo excited I finally got something. My levels were good today and my tank was setup 1-8-12 so I figured I couldn't wait anymore. I got a beautiful awesome cleaner shrimp!!!! I know some think I shouldn't have but I'm so sorry I fell in love! I acclimated for 1 hour and 20 minutes. I released and first it hid and then it started climbing out slowly. At this very moment it's looking around slowly under my rock upside down. I really hope it makes it.... Im thinking of names.... Yes I name them! I will post a picture tomorrow if it survives the night. I'm so excited to have something finally other than my awesome snails!

I killed my first cleaner shrimp in a matter of minutes because I was not careful enough. If he's alive and swimming around after being in there a few minutes, he'll probably be just fine.

Exotic. My first contribution was three Chromis. Still with me three years later. I'm so bored with them. :)

My 2 passed on me.... 1 of the 2 not so long ago...

They were huge.... And I don't know why.... I did find one peppermint on there side, peppermints had the right side and the skunks had the left side...

Good to know your test kits were just off a little. Those API test kits are notorious for giving false readings. I used them for awhile but now am using Red Sea test kits. Hannah meters are also really cool. Im going to be getting the phosphate meter from them after watching how easy it was to use.

If you get another cleaner shrimp they will lay eggs.... they are asexual. :) I need to buy mine a mate come to think of it.

When should u worry about nitrate? I have maybe 10ppm... This coming Monday it will be one week since my water change..it was a large water change but since everything is at 0 except nitrate now I want to keep the changes smaller and on schedule.. I have a thick sand bed and some rock. Is 1 or two gallons good weekly or biweekly? What works best for little tanks or just in general?

Small frequent changes are the best for a small tank in my opinion. I would try a weekly 1 gallon change and then check your levels like you are doing. Once you start adding more critters to the tank you will obviously be producing more wastes and might have to either up the frequency or size of changes.

For reference I used to do a weekly 5 gallon change in my old 30 gallon tank. I started battling water parameters changes so I upped to 3 gallon changes twice a week to try to stay ahead of it.
