Dnt know yet Karin.... Been scratching my head since morning .....thing about moving corals to a hold off tank may be a large container or so....dnt know yet... Right now I am still in shock that this going to happen......
But my wife is supporting me on this so that's gud.....so upgrade is no issue so far but it has to be in my garage but that's ok.......

Congrats on the upgrade, and like Karin said with your corals taking it slow is an understatement!

So here's what is the plan for right now and I need to start gather equipments.....
Thinking about doing around a 240 gln DP with dimensions close to

What skimmer should I go with and return pump ???

I am partial to Panworld 50PXX, it puts out a lot of water for the amount of watts. If you think you need more maybe add a second pump and shut it down in night mode? That is what I do on my tank. On skimmers I am definitely no help, I still use my Urchin Pro that I have had for 10 years.

It's probably cheaper to insulate and condition your garage than try to manage the tank in the extremes.

My nephew has his taxidermy shop in my brothers garage and with a small window unit it stays very cool. I like the the Neo 185, center overflow with no center brace.

If you want to go big, look at Alton's deep dimension tank. That thing is a work of beauty.

Tank size and equipment is all determined by budget and available tank space. If your budget and size allows, you can build a fish room inside your garage with one side viewable inside your home. You can completely enclose the fish room and add a vent from your existing home a/c. You'll also need a heat exchanger to help with the heat and humidity. Here is a link to Steve Weast's tank in Oregon:

http://www.oregonreef.com

He had one of the nicest tanks ever assembled, but unfortunately the tank was taken down many years ago.

As for equipment here is a list I put together for one of my previous builds according to preference:

Lighting:
1) Halide
Pro - Great color and growth
Con - Heat and wattage consumption, might require a chiller, will require supplemental lighting for dusk/dawn effect, and changing bulbs out ever 6-12 months
2) Led
Pro - A lot of adjustability, low heat, great growth and 5+ life expectancy
Con - $$$$ and light coverage is aweful unless you have a lot of LED's
Variable - Coloring is still questionable for LED's and falls into both a pro and con category
3) T5
Pro - Great light coverage, great color, great growth, and low heat
Con - No shimmering effect and changing bulbs out every 6-12 months

Skimmer:
I'll keep this simple. I've used dozens of skimmers in the past and really prefer needlewheel/pinwheel/meshwheel designs compare to downdraft & beckett. They are smaller and quieter and pricing has seem to hit a ceiling recently.
1)ATB and Super Reef Octopus
I know Vertex Alpha and Bubble King should also be included in the list but any warranty issues might require your skimmer to be down for a couple of weeks since the companies are based outside of the US.

Return Pump
Internal - Eheim, Sicce, and Octopus
External - Iwaki and Reeflo

Powerheads
This one really comes down to personal preference and you really have to weigh in on the pros and cons to decide for yourself. I personally hate having multiple huge powerheads in my tank and like the idea of a closed loop system. At the same time you have to design the closed loop system prior to starting your tank as it is not something you can just add at a later date. Tunze and Koralia's are both quiet and efficient but are huge and bulky. Ecotech's have the smallest foot print but are noisy.

There are some great build ideas on RC and R2R, but if you really want to see some awesome builds then you have to check out UR.

I still can't believe this is happening? You got me back into chalices again... Im guessing you've tried everything to get rid of the bryopsis?

Mike had his tank built into a wall with one side in the garage inside a room with it's own hvac.

I have tried everything Kevin and plus I am so bsy with my work these days have been paying attention to my tank as I use too....I am still into chalices and my upgrade was due any way as I lack room

Yup that'll be nice too Allan but that's too much work for me:whew:Wana keep things simple right now...plus wifey wont agree

Right now these r my options and still making my mind on which tank to get...
Couple mast members r selling about 3 to 4 years old AGE tanks with dimensions 72x30x24 and 60x30x24...
Or brand new DSA 60x30x24 or 60x27x24. Or 72x30x21

If you have the room and the funds I'd do the 72x30x24. It'll buy you a little more time before you get the itch to do an upgrade again. =)

Lucky, I just got your text from like 2 days ago.....grrrrr....freaking Sprint. I'll call you later today.

I had bryopsis pretty bad and the Kent Tech M cleared it up for me. It didn't work exactly like it did for others, but it did work. I dosed and brought Mag up to about 1700 for 2 weeks, didn't see any change, stopped dosing for about a week. I figured I would give it another shot, brought Mag back up to about 1900, pulled all the bryopsis I could out by hand and the rest just melted.

Bigger is always better, but you may try that first.

I personally like vho's but they are only good as supplemental lighting on large systems. They just don't produce enough par to be used by themselves. Halides are a great choice for large systems and DIG kits are fairly cheap. The problem though is though is the power consumption and heat they produce. T5's are also another option but unless you have a open top tank with no canopy there really is no reason to by a nice fixture like the ATI. You could just buy the ATI ballast and reflectors if you have a canopy on the.

Oh, I see. Well good luck with the upgrade Lucky. I'm sure it will be amazing. I bet you go coral crazy with all that new space, like you don't already...j/k

That is probably the only thing I miss on not having my canopy on my tank anymore is not having my 160w VHO true actinic to suppliment my radiums.

Goofball310
Wed, 29th Feb 2012, 08:04 AM
I completely agree. Nothing compares to the pop in color that VHO'S actinic can produce.

Whatever you do don't go bigger than 34" wide. It sucks having to turn a tank on its side to get through doors.

Goofball310
Wed, 29th Feb 2012, 10:16 AM
Hahaha, I'm putting together a 150 gallon cube right now and half way through building the stand I decided to measure my doors. I soon realized that I built the stand too tall but I've decided to take out a window to get it in rather than tearing apart the stand and starting over.

I don't think the size will really matter to Lucky anyways if he still plans on putting the tank in his garage.

LuckySingh
Wed, 29th Feb 2012, 11:43 AM
It will not be more than 30".....I either going with AGE or deep sea aquatics standard 30" wide tanks....
As far as the light I wanted to do 3x 250wt halides or Ati s pm 8x80 or 10x80 Wt...

I'd do halides and you're already going to need a chiller since the aquarium will be located in your garage.

Gud news went by Steve's place and he's offering me a really nice deal on equipment....thanks bro
Tank has been decided and it is
72x30x24.....
Will try to get the tank in by few day and than my build starts.....
Now the tank will sit in my living room couldn't believe I got a green signal for that.....
I should hve all the equipment pretty much from steve to start that giant tank ....all I am debating on is lights....
Should I go for MH or T5s....
Tank has the canopy so either 2x400wtts retro fit with some vhos
or 3x250 or maybe since I am abig t5s fan go with 10x80 ATI pm .....??

Lighting is really a personal preference.

You should go with the T5's since you like them. You could also go with a retro t5 kit to save on money since you have a canopy and would be able to see the fixture anyways. Not to mention how difficult it is going to be to take the fixture out of the canopy to change the bulbs, clean the shield, and other fixture maintenance.

It lokked good with 2 400w but if i was going MH, I'd do 3 250w. Less power and better coverage. Tank is not too deep, so the 250's should have plenty of penetration.

LuckySingh
Fri, 2nd Mar 2012, 12:31 PM
Yup three 250 will be better spread....

I think just about all the electronic ballast out there are made by the same company or at least represented by the same company coralvue. Definitely go with a ballast that you can crank up to 250w +.

Quick question. Is the bryopsis you're battling covering the coral? You shouldn't have to worry about transferring the bryopsis if you can leave all the rock behind and just take the actual coral.

A habit I just started is when moving a frag, dose whatever it is attached to in peroxide, kills algae, bugs, and whatever else is in or on the plug or rock. You have to be careful not to get it on the coral frag but to me it it is worth not ending up with something I do not want.

Honest question here, Alton. How would you treat the plug or rubble piece without getting peroxide on the coral? I'm assuming that it would be attached at the time. I may need to try this.
