just wondering what everybody thinks of these

I like mine to the point that they are not going up for sale any time soon.
I have told others that my only complaints are the controller could be a little better and that I wish they would come out with a UV to help reds.

I agree with everything John said.

John, try the magenta stunner strips, they helped, just need a few of them and I couldn't find a good way to mount since mine are on light trees.

I've been under LED's for about a year, but just recently switched to the AI Sol's about 3 weeks ago. I can't comment on growth yet, but I have noticed one of my brown acros has recently started getting some color.

Same here, the controlability is awesome, I love the slow ramps up and down and the different colors the tank goes through.

Not really, it looks more like a frag tank than anything else right now. Once I clean it up some, I'll get some new pics.

The AI sol modules will grow sps if wanted, look up my TOTM thread/video. Just about every sps in that tank started out as small frags

I've had mine for about 3 weeks, and I really like them! I especially like that I no longer have to deal with plugging and unplugging anymore, and yes the colors that these add to my tank are awesome, also like the moon cycle feature and the thunderstorms, really freaks people out when they see it! I have started to notice growth in just the short time I have had these with SPS and LPS, and also with the Coraline Algae growth. They are a great unit with a great price! Highly recommend them to anyone who is thinking about getting them!!

Good luck. I spent the better part of 2 months messing with my AI's to find the sweet spot.

Becareful not to set them up at 100% when you first set it up. I had mine set at 75% and noticed some corals bleaching and some zoa's not opening up. I lowered it down to 50% and slowly ramped up to 60% over the next few weeks and everything regained their color.

Yeah, set them at at low setting, I set mine up at 35 white, 45 blue, and 45 royal blue on the highest setting for the mid day from 12pm to 3pm, and slowly raised them up over the weeks and now I'm at 60 white, 70 blue and 70 royal blue and my coral show no sign of bleaching and have all opened up the way they should, actually have way better colors now then when I had my mh/t5 setup, and best of all, no expensive chiller! I have heard a lot about corals getting bleached because even know the lights may not look that bright, they put out way more light and parr readings than 400 watt mh setups do, so you have to be real carefully on how much you set them at.

Here is the way I have mine setup through out the day:

7am: 5 white 10 blue 10 royal blue
8am:15 white 20 blue 20 royal blue
9am: 25 white 30 blue 20 royal blue
10am: 35 white 40 blue 40 royal blue
11am: 45 white 50 blue 50 royal blue
12pm: 60 white 70 blue 70 royal blue
3pm: 45 white 50 blue 50 royal blue
4pm: 35 white 40 blue 40 royal blue
5pm: 25 white 30 blue 30 royal blue
6pm: 15 white 20 blue 20 royal blue
7pm: 5 white 10 blue 10 royal blue
8pm: 0 white 1 blue 2 royal blue

I also turned on the luniar cycle and set the ramp at 5 minutes, and have seen no problems

The corals that are most likely to bleach will be the corals directly underneath the light. The only drawback I've found with the AI units is that they create a spotlight effect directly under them. You can observe this if you point your light directly at a wall. If you notice the spotlight effect in your tank you can raise your lights or if you have a canopy and arr limited on space you can buy wider optics from AI.

i have them mounted 14'" off the water with the return pump breaking the surface so wicked shimmer i love these lights

I am happy with mine. I plan on adding a 3rd module so I can ramp back the power and get a little better spread.

I had to turn off the storm function and lunar though. Full moon lit up the house and a 10% chance of a storm will freak you out when you forget about and are watching tv when the storm hits.

LOL, yes it will, it has freaked me out a time or two. The only reason why i keep the lunar effect is because I have read that on certain types of the moon cycle that the Corals spread their seeds in the water. Like I said, I have only had mine for about 3 weeks, so if I dont see a major improvement on Coral spread, than I will just keep my settings without the lunar setting on.

I love mine, I wish they added on some reds and they have a new series on the way. Which means that you should have seem the price drop a bit. So far I have kept clams but after my sailfin got hungry, I have't replaced it.

If you just got them set them at a lower setting for a few weeks. I would suggest setting them at 40 or lower on everything, either that or place your coral if you have any at the bottom, cause it might bleach them.....like I said in my earlier post, might not look like alot of light, but it is to your coral. Set it low, than adjust slowly.

my max setting right now is 45/55/55 peak intensity

FireWater
Mon, 5th Mar 2012, 09:21 AM
King, you need to adjust the blue, royal blue, and white settings to your liking. If you turn down all blues and up the white it will lighten it up. It took me a while before I found a combination that I was happy with.

Random, After about a month I had mine running all the way up to 100%. Didn't like the color so I adjusted it out. For about 2 1/2 hours out of the day I am running above 90% on the 2 fixtures. Once I get a third then I will turn the intensity down though.

Stompy, I am currently looking into placing some red and/or UV into the light by replacing or adding to the fixture. After all I have read about the upcoming Vega (or whatever it is named) I don't see anything about them adding the red spectrum. Would be nice though as that is my only complaint about the lights as well.

Hey John, how many of these units would I need for my tank?

FireWater
Mon, 5th Mar 2012, 10:01 AM
They have a 2' X 2' spread at 13" above the water line. I am running 2 on my 4' X 2' 120g tank. I will be adding a 3rd module because I have some shadowing that I am not happy about, but I have plenty of light going into my tank.

Your tank is 4' X 3' correct? I could see you getting away with 3 modules arranged in a V pattern to start.

allan
Mon, 5th Mar 2012, 10:25 AM
That's not too bad, I was thinking that I would need five, three in the front and two in the back.

FireWater
Mon, 5th Mar 2012, 12:16 PM
Notice I said to start with. I was taking into account your overflows in the back corners. The only issue I can see is the middle of your tank from front to back.

allan
Mon, 5th Mar 2012, 12:24 PM
Three across the front and one behind?

FireWater
Mon, 5th Mar 2012, 02:07 PM
Possibly.

If not you would lose 6" of light front and back. 3 is a good starting point and see what it gives you.

I don't even know why I'm considering it... I've been warming the spouse up for a lift kit for my el truck-o. This would certainly impede that intent. Perhaps I should just stick with the MP40s. :)

How high do you have them placed above your water surface. Mine are at 13" but before that I was at about 10" and it didnt look right. The guys at Elegant Reef where I bought them from told me to raise them up, once I did, the lights looked way better.

Firewater, I was looking at the new pucks too but I gotta wait till Neptune updates the controller and who knows how long that will take.

I start off at 35 go to 50 and use cloud cover for about 40% to change it up durning the day. I was increasing it slowly to 60, but it look so good at that level, i have left it alone.
