red people eater zoanthids

So I got this corals about a month ago and they have yet to open. They are on the sand bed of my 90 gallon tank. Im running 7 T5's and they are under moderate to low flow. Should I move them higher up in the tank to see if they will open?

If it hasn't opened in a month then it might be dead. I've had zoa's go a few days and even close to 2 weeks. Anything longer than that I usually consider dead.

well i moved them into my biocube last night to see if anything would change. Ill have to see them today when i go home. Its not like they never opened. I saw them trying to open up once but they never fully came out. I can still see a buit of the skirt color in the dead center of each polyp. I hope they recover.

I don't count a coral out until I can't see it anymore and algae has grown over the area. I've seen so many comebacks. I think moving it to the biocube was a good call.

something that has happen to me..... zoas will get a skin whe they close up sometimes its a brownish color, ive used a feeding or turkey baster to blow it off and even a soft toothbrush gently, should see a skin sloth off.

good point, I've seen this as well and when left alone they just die but helping them as you mentioned seems to encourage them to open again...same for any type of cyano algae that might start growing on the closed polyps

I agree with cleaning them off. I would also dip them in either coralrx or a mixture of 75% tank water and 25% hydrogen peroxide (just the plain old 3% stuff you can buy at walmart). Sometimes mine will close up like that and I stick them in front of the powerhead to blow off any grot, then dip them. They almost always open back up in a couple of days after I treat them.

check your alkalinity. i was having some issues with people eaters before i started dosing for alkalinity, after that they perked up in a couple days. it could just be a problem that i created, seeing as how i have been using sealab 28 blocks and reef complete . the sealab has no alk additive so i have to add b-ionic alk solution to get it right.

Ill get a picture tonight if their still not opended up. Also would the low alkalinity just affect the red people eaters or would it affect other zoas as well? The rest of my zoa frags are doing well.

Nah, I have certain zoas that do poorly much earlier than others due to alkalinity swings.
