well time to start another build, this one will be an actual build and going to be taking my time on this one. I've been on the hunt for a new tank for a while and really wanted a 60 inch tank and I found it. Oceanic Tech Tank ,starphire glass 60x24x24.
So I'll prob use my current skimmer rated for 150g(sea side aquatics cs-1) till I have tank heavily stocked.
I'll be getting a new sump trigger system 30 or 36 with built in refugium.
lighting in torn between the ATI 8 bulb power module or mazzara LEDs
flow will be 2x mp-40 and a mp10esw(back wall) maybe minus one mp-40 and go with a nano wave box
planning on having this up by early/mid summer. my girlfriend Emily and i are building this together and I'm glad shes as excited as I am, both our current tanks will be combined.
on way to its new home

Absolutely. It seems like it's been at least a year since you switched tanks!
And ...COMBINING tanks! That's a big step. Hope that's not the equivalent to giving away your last baby's clothes. ;)
Congrats :)

placed my order with Elegant Reef for some new equipment, trigger system
elite ruby 36 sump/refugium, and sea side aquatics cs-2, and 2x sicce2 for returns. big thanks to Elegant Reef for getting what I want and not having to compromise. I'll be running a 2x250w and 2x t5 light I got used but will upgrading ASAP to the lumenbright 60 inch fixture. http://img.tapatalk.com/6330e6e5-8ad9-0c18.jpg

nothing like true full spectrum light and some shimmer, going back to the basics and some modern twists with this tank.
king they are made by coralvue , lumenbright fixture. it has the same pendants as the ones above the reef tank at elegant reef but also has 2 80w t5 and 12 1w LEDs. also the ballast is switchable from 250-400w

ok finally a picture !!! so I decided I wanted a sump big enough for my skimmer yet small enough to save room under stand. so I had nick at elegant reef design one off my current sump, and have our acrylic guy "dan" build one. wow I'm very happy with it!!! it has a fuge in front and enough room for my return pump. 24lx20dx16h

the crazy part is i went against everything i was taught, i used tap water, i didnt cycle a month before adding fish (24hours) coral in 72 hours. so far no stress on livestock. i ran my water through sediment and carbon filters and used prime. i have a diatom out break(tap still has phosphates) but gfo is controlling that. but i am using rodi to top off and water changes, just so i dont have to worry about phosphates now.

at the moment with current fixture i get 350par at surface 250 mid and 125-140 on floor under hilades 2x2 spread each. the bulbs are over 10 months old

happy birthday to me!!!! got a nice fixture today. current USA outer orbit, 2x250w hqi, 4x54w T5ho, led moonlight. plans are to run fixture see if i like the 10k bulbs and t5 that came factory or I may just swap all lights to suit my liking. only downside is the hqi ballast is magnetic, they tend to over drive bulbs, and are huge and heavy. i may swap my ice cap ballast instead.

love the new light a lil noisy from having a fan in fixture(loudest part), two fans in ballast one in each(magnetic ballast). so when all lights are on its 716w of light!!! maybe a lil more since mag ballast over drive. LEDs are nice two diff colors white and blue so looks like full moon when they are all on, I have whites on 3 days out of the week. I'm not happy with 10k HQI bulbs way to yellow in color, so Louis has some Phoenix 14k coming. the current USA hanging arms where hard to find as alot of there stuff is discontinued, then I had to slip them inside 1 inch conduit to make them long enough so my fixture isn't hanging 1 inch from water. all in all I'm happy with lights. Current USA outer orbit 2x250w hqi and 4x54w T5ho.

well this light fixture was a great deal at first but has turned into a pain in the (_|_)...... so I bought it brand new in box unused from someone gettin out before getting tank up. so I've swapped all the original t5 bulbs ATI and KZ. then I got around to MH phoenix 14k, then magnetic ballast didnt fire bulb right. so I had to buy a new electronic ballast(caught a sale and saved $100). then ballast went out for t5 and today that ballast starting smoking!! well te t5 ballast had come undone from its based and was resting on MH reflector(explains the electrical smell when it went out weeks ago). then I tried to go to a local store that does lighting I called them they had them in stock(workhorse and advance) so I had 20 min to get there and I was 15 min away. bam I get there at 4:55 to see a sign"as if July 30 we have moved ......".so to drown my sorrows I got to elegant reef and buy a Fiji purple and a blue plus(thanks Louis). then Mark shoots me a text with a list of ballast he has and comes right over, after test fitting I settle on the workhorse 7. after 2 hours of rewiring and retro fitting it all goes together smoothly!! dang I love this hobby but who said you had to be electrician, plumber, marine biologist an one lucky fool to keep things going!! thanks for reading my rant!

OMG,that is so true. You have to be a jack of all trades, like you said, in order to get things done in this hobby. Of course it doesn't help that they cram everything in those fixtures with so little room to work. You always need a 3rd hand and fingers that bend backwards to get the job done. A wratchet wrist doesn't hurt either.
So you're running 2 blue+ and 2 fiji purples?

bulbs 2x250w phoenix 14k powered by galaxy ballast( ballast make a big diff how bulbs look) 1-ATI blue plus, 2x ATI coral plus(great spectrum) and 1- Fiji purple. I'm running coral plus to cut blue look but not loose pop of blue plus.

when aqualifter pumps fail to push water through your giant kalk reactor, you go dig in your reef stash and find a pump with a 1/4 inch connection and taaaadaaa!

yes it is!!! it's not macgyver when you need the extra power!! it's well thought out plan of attack. the aqua lifter pumps didn't have the power, the reactor has 1/4 push fittings so the only thing I had left in my arsenal was the booster pump!!

took this pic Sunday after cleaning up tank, topping off the monster kalk reactor, cleaning up bio pellet reactor and gfo reactor. finally got some time to sit and enjoy the tank! so far all coral are doing well, had a bout of wrasse die offs, lost my blue spot tamarin and velvet and my fav fish my prized yellow wrasse who has been with me since 2008. they all died a moth part each other all of sudden. box fish cut his face up and has a lil ich so I'm treating him now, he's eating an still active so he should pull through.
been getting a lot of questions what I dose lately so here a pic of my cocktail. I just dose according to bottle, now remember I do small water changes and kalk and strontium and mag are dosed through my reactor via top off. I also feed reef roids and fuel.

i will be using them as soon as i get the proper hanging kit or legs. now i know my kalk top off is a issue i have my reef keeper charting when my top off switches are triggered and it isnt much, tank stays at 78-79 all day and night even with lights off so my lil wal-mart fan and the height of my fixture is dialed in at the moment. im hoping to get a accurate trial of this light for a month or two see how my coral react. and if need be ill ease back into my mh fixture. i know my tank well and will stay on top of parameters while i run it. so be ready for a honest opinion, if my colors suck this thing will be gone ASAP.

Honest question from someone who has never used MH: If you switch MH bulbs (like to a different bulb type/brand) does it have any noticeable affect on the corals as they adjust to the new bulb?

there is always an adjustment period with any new bulbs, color will depend on what bulb kelvin but no big diff . i usually run half time for week then bump them up an hour every 3 days till i get my full day light period. i do my t5 change 2 weeks before then mh bulbs. the bulbs par levels drop off as you use them and so does color spectrum so coral need to re adjust a lil.

money isn't the issue only 120-150 a year to run the whole tank. I spend more than that on GFO a year! heat was never an issue also with clip fan I run 78-79 all year day and night. I'm just bored with tank so this light is a new challenge.
