I hate not having a big tank, but I picked up another coral today. I was told it's a Elk Horn.

Pale baby blue.

Old picture in the thumbnail, updated today for a growth comparison.

Thank goodness I didn't end up with that. I got it at the LFS, they never know what it is that they've got.

This is out of sea world here in town.

I really like it's pale blue, and hope that it doesn't darken.

lol I was actually really getting envious of you having the usual Elkhorn. That would have been so cool!

not elkhorn, but awesome, and the seaworld stuff usually goes pretty quick, so it probably won't get too much darker

Lol, well if you happen to come across the name let me know... I will probably forget it... Elk horn was such an easy one to memorize.

Most importantly, Gloria likes it. I showed her the picture of it and she asked me if I was going to get it.

"er, yeah! If you really like it I will go by and get it tomorrow."

She saw it in my tank about the same time I had said that.

That was close... The only difference, and that was after looking through the google pics of the blue stag, is that mine has a lot of polyp extension, and that's where the blue coloring comes from. Well, the stalk is a light blue too.

If only I could convince my daughter to take a macro shot.

I like the pale blue color. Put it next to an orange digi and they will compliment each other nicely. The blue one will say, "Gee Mr Digi, your polyps look extremely nice today." While the digi will reply, "Are those new branches Mr. Elk".

In the top right of that pic, is that green coral a pavona?

Maybe a Seaworld Selago (Acropora selago)? Here's a "frag" photo from it in my tank:

Bill,

That does look like it. I searched google images for a close up under that name. Looks like I will have to move it later when it starts to branch out.

Cory,

I don't think it is. I've been calling it a hydno-something for years. It's pressed right against a blue ridge coral, and neither seems to be stronger than the other... If that helps.

Hydnophora. Sweet looking coral selection you have there dude! So, I'm a little late to the dance, how do you keep up with calcium use. Kalkwasser, calcium reactor, 2 part, etc???

Kalkwassar top off. I have a powerhead that turns on overnight. I figure the concentration will be higher at night even though evaporation is lower at night.

No dosing pump, just gravity fed through a float. About once a week I link the line directly through the rodi. I believe that the extra pressure clears the accumulation of kalk in the line.

Ah, the Texas Todd method. Do you have problems with the top-off water going stale with the kalkwasser? Troy and I were just talking about Todd's setup and wondered how he keeps his kalkwasser fresh since I always followed the rule that kalkwasser water was unusable after exposed to air for a few days.

I keep it in a 20 gallon tote, lid on. I run it clear once a week.

I remember ping telling me about that. I've suffered no I'll effects in the last year or so. I find that kalk is a very forgiving substance to deal with. When the mood strikes, if my top off is clearing, I mix a spoonful into a bottle and shake, then straight into the sump. Around 3-4am. You can almost see the coral growing pale at the tips the next day.
