The purple hornets are lovely. are they good growers? or fairly fragile/slow?

Yes, I love them. Here's a pic taken by Rick from the mother colony from early on:

We started with a large colony from the wild almost a year ago and lost all but a few polyps, within a month the few polyps acclimated to tank parameters and exploded in growth rate. This has been one of our fastest growers for zoas and palys and I believe everyone that has purchased some from us has had the same feedback. I'd say it's very hardy and since they have done so well for us we have been able to offer them at great prices.

I got 2 Palys of purple hornets from rob about 6 months ago .. Super fast grower for me... I fraged it a month ago and it had more than 70 polyps ... My colony still has roughly about 50 polyps

get out of here!
I must have some. so what's the secret? low light? high light? feeding? flow?

Mr Cob

no secret here...they are hardy.

I have them in two tanks...one is low light, low flow and one is heavy light, heavy flow. The only thing I can tell is that they have greater color and longer skirts in the lower flow, lower light but they grow faster in heavy light, heavy flow.

Mr Cob

Mr Cob
Sat, 7th Jan 2012, 12:42 PM
ok, not going to be able to score any dendros this time around but perhaps something better depending on your preference... from Australia, Red/Pink Blanophyllia (listed as "blano" but I believe it should be "balano...")
