I managed to pick this up on craigslist for 275.00 I just finished refinishing the stand, added the silver handles and waterproof laquer yesterday. I also painted the back of the tank yesterday. I did the first coat in navy blue and the second coat in black giving it a very cool affect. I also bought all new plumbing. Yesterday I picked up a 29 gallon tank which will be the new refurgium. I just need to get the baffles cut. As soon as Uncle Sam gives me back this years taxes I'll be adding a 6 bulb T5. I'm going to be using my exhisting live rock from my 55 gallon. I will be drilling it and securing it with nylon threaded rods. Thge technique looks very cool. I will also be adding about 4 inches of sand. I'll keep updating with pictures as I my work in progress continues.

Thanks. This time I get to set up everything right the first time. My wife is going nuts because of all the trips to Lowes. Today I'm going to get the baffles for the new fuge. My last refugium wasn't big enough to hold the skimmer so it took up a lot of room under my 55. I haven't decided if I'm going to use glass or acrylic for the baffles but I have decided on the design.I'm going to use this template. http://www.melevsreef.com/acrylics/sumps/f/sump_f.html. The differance is that I'm coverting a 29 gallon glass tank so I'm gonna make the skimmer section 12x15 and the return section about 12x5. That will leave about another 9" for the fuge itself. My skimmer is a recirculation reef octopus. because it's a recirculating skimmer I have a mag 5 in the skimmer section that takes up about 4" of space. I also have 2 smaller pumps that feed media reactors for phosguard and biopellets. I'd like to put them in the skimmer section because in my present configuration they are in my return chamber and I always worry about them sucking up copopods.

IT's a fun proyect to build a sump. I just did! In my proyect I mod an acrylic wet/dry into a sump with fuge. What they recommended me is that use Glass with Glass and acrylic with acrylic. So if you are going to use a glass tank, use glass baffles. That's what everyone said when I was doing my research! Good Luck! A good sump configuration will save you a lot of headaches.
Advice: Before placing the sump below the tank, put a plastic bag or several between, (sump on top of the bags, I put black bags) so in case you have any spills, the water doesn't touch the wood. I believe is a good preventive disaster good advice. It doesn't look good, but it will help your stand look cleaner and dry for years!

glass is probably cheaper then acrylic anyways. My only concern with that is sharp edges. I was thinking about putting somthing on the base of the stand for spills. I'm also thinking about putting a devider under the stand for the power outlet to protect from splashes. This is going in my living room so I want a very clean look.

My only concern with that is sharp edges.

For my sump sections I had Hobby Lobby cut some 3/16" glass and then I glued them together to double the thickness. It's real easy to buff down the edges of glass. Just get some fine grit sand paper and run it back an forth across the edges a few times. It took maybe a few minutes of sanding to get all four sides nice and rounded.

I just picked up the glass from Lowes today. 3/16th seems to be the standard because they won't cut anything thicker then that. I guess you have to go to a glass shop if you want thicker. After I got home I thought about combining 2 planes with silicone but I'll have to go back and get 4 more planes for the bubble trap. I'm going to use 3 baffles spaces out about a half inch.

I finally finished installing the baffles for the refugium. I ended up having the glass cut at Lowes and ended up glueing 2 paynes together for stability. I had a hell of a time looking for the silicone. I ended up using the loctite stuff from Lowes but it only came in 2.7 ounce tubes so I went a few. I ordered marine silicone from Amazon but it still hasn't shown up. I'll take a few pics tomorrow. It's not the neatest silicone job but I was nervous about using glass so I went a little bit overboard. I sanded down the top of the baffles so I wouldn't cut myself and added a thin coat of silicone over the top just to be safe.

You can use the regular type I silicone at Lowes. Just stay away from the stuff with the anti-mold and bacteria stuff. I think that's type II silicone.

I have the refugium installed and finished the plumbing today. I siliconed a acrylic sheet on the bottom of the tank so the live rock won't be directly on the glass. I also decided to strip and refinish the stand. Black seemed to be very dark in my living room so I went the opposite route and did satin white. It took me a week to do the job and it was a royal pain to remove the laquer on the old stand. The plumbing came out real neat and I used clear PVC glue for the pipes so I have no blue stains.

Very nice and clean job! And you have good space on the right to place your ATO container and or other Reactors if needed! Nice! Wondering if you are going to us LED's? Are you going to build a canopy? Are you going to paint the back of the tank?

Actually I did paint the back of the tank navy blue. I have 2 media reactors in my current setup. 1 with phosguard and the other has bio pellets. As far as lights are concerned I am torn between T5's and Leds or maye a combination of the 2. If I go T5's then I'll do 6 bulbs but if I go LED's I've narrowed it down to PAR38's and the Orphek lights. I was thinking about setting up like a track lighting if I go that route. I'm not sure if that setup would work with a canopy or not. My next purchase will be a couple water pump's. I'd love to get ecotech's but my budget allows hydor koralia's. Hopefully next week I'll be ordering the nylon threaded rod's i'll be using to connect my live rock with. It will be my first time drilling rock but after everything I've read it doesn't look to difficult. I have a very nice dewalt drill set. My main challange will be with some of the rock I'd like to use being attached to some very established corals.

I'm taking baby steps but getting a little closer to my final objective. My wife had the idea of removing the carpet underneath the tank and installing tile flooring in case of water spillage. It took about a week to complete the process with work and all. I also had a brainstorm about installing a side door to the stand to make skimmer access easier since my new refugium is so high. I reinstalled a some of the plumbing as well to minimize usage of flexible tubing and installed a ball and check valve for the return line. I also secured the PVC with brackets sinch the ball and check valves are so tight. My next step will be getting the 1/2 PVC and varous elbows together and drilling the live rock. For lighting I have decided on getting the 6x54W Tek Light Elite from sunlight supply.

I finally finished my 90 gallon build. I decided on a ATI sunpower 6 bulb light fixture using 5 ATI true blues, 1 Geisemann midday sun, and 1 KZ Fiji purple. I love the blue tint. So far the corals seem to be adjusting. I did lose 1 firefish. I think it jumped out of the tank when I wasn't looking and my cat had Sushi. I drilled the rock with 1/2 inch PVC with a 13" masonry bit and it cut through like butter. I have 2 Hydor Koralia Evolution 1400 pumps on a JBJ wavemaker and it's awesome how quiet they are. I have tons af space around the live rock for watter flow. I also found a sweet deal on a Refractometer for only $25.00. I was a little sceptical at first because of how cheap it was, but It was delivered 4 days after purchase and is a very good quality. So please check out the pics and hope you enjoy as much as I do

It was an after thought for me also. I just used a jig saw and cut it then went to Lowes to get the wood to make the door itself. Just be carefull with the jigsaw. I used a large drill bit to get the hole started for the saw.

So you switched to halides? What happened to the tek fixture?

Looking good man! You don't have any problems with all those tangs in the same tank?

Actually they are Kessil A350W LED pendents. I sold the ATI 3 months ago and bought the LED's. It was an awesome upgrade. I just now have the power dimed in at 50% where all my corals and my clams are happy.

Thanks for all the kind words. As for the Tangs I have been very lucky getting them to all play well together. Every time I added a new tang I made sure to have the tank dark for 6 or more hours and after that they all seemed to get along. The tangs in this last video all survived a pretty bad ICH outbreak and are all spot free and getting very fat. I feed them a variety of Mysis, blood worms, and flakes. On occasion I add Kent Garlic to help keep up immunity. For the clams I use phyto every couple weeks.

Just went through the the thread, great job. Tank looks amazing a year in. The rock work looks awesome, 90s are tall and you took advantage of that height. I had the exact same 90g before, I have to say standard 90s have always been one of my favorites.
