i think the most i ever spent on a coral was right around $50, most on a fish, i'd say no more than 35 or so. i'm a simple man with complex tastes, but i'm perfectly happy growing corals from tiny frags. tiny frags are usually pretty cheap, so if they thrive i can say i grew that from a single polyp, and if they die in my care i'm not out a whole lot.

$40 for a yellow rim tang and $80 for a bleeding apple scoly.
I opened this thinking getting married was the most expensive decision I made, but that's an indirect expense that eventually led to the purchases above.
Are you aware that these women spend up to a $100 or $140 for a hair dryer? I thought those things were only $20-25. And they don't even last as long as my tang does. I've been through two dryers... sorry to hijack, just pent up frustration.

Uh, yeah... when I was a teenager I spent a lot of money on hair products. But in my defense, it was the '80s and I was a bit of a metal head meets country boy, hence my camaro mullet.

Only two occasions where we spent more than $50 on a fish and both are still with us and worth every penny! $85 for a female bellus angel that I had been wanting and wanting for ages and $100 on the biggest fattest blue hippo tang that I had ever seen.
There have been a couple of coral colonies in the $100 range but not lately and there have been very few of those occasions.
Mostly I try not to remember what stuff costs because that would take the enjoyment out of it for me.

$220 for a 75 head Aussie Rainbow Acan colony. 2 years later I still have it minus about 15 heads from a not so pleasant encounter with a GBTA.
