Warning! This is just my opinion, use at your own risk!
As most know I used this product to treat my Acropora Corals for red bugs and for AEFW and IMO this product is 100% safe for use on these corals as a preventative dip and as a treatment. All of my corals went through 3 fairly harsh dips and 2 weeks later, are looking as good or better than they ever have. One Acro i have had for about 6 months has never shown any signs of growth.. now has new growth tips forming.
Here is what I conclude:
1. I used 5ml per cup of tank water for 5 min. this product has a very wide margin of error. in other words you could easily use 10ml per cup for 10 min and probably be fine, but there is no need to go that strong with this stuff.
2. for what you get and what you are using it for, it is a very inexpensive and easy to find product with NO bad oder!
3.I will use this product for all my preventative dips from now on
4. VERY IMPORTANT- I would recommend a quarantine tank when dipping with this product and would dip at least 3 different times since you are going through the effort. The reason I recommend a quarantine setup is because this is very powerful stuff and even TRACE amounts will be harmfull to all Crustaceans (arthropods, amphipods,ETC.)
5. If using as a dip, wear gloves while handling and dipping corals OR wash hands very well after done and BEFORE you put corals back in tank. also have at least a couple of different fresh tank baths set up to rinse well before you put corals back in tank.
6. My conclusion: This product is very effective, cant beat the price for the job it does, is not harmful even at short high does to corals, and the only downside i see right now is that it will Kill ANY crustacean it comes in contact with.

Hope this was helpful

Old thread but interesting review. Going to try this stuff next round of sticks I pick up. When you say 3 dips and then quarantine are these dips in rapid succession (lets say within an hours time) 5 min each or spread out over a few days or week? How long do you generally keep them in your quarantine system before introducing them to you're primary after treatment?

Spread out over a couple of days to weeks. QT set up is for not allowing a possibility of the chemical getting into your main display.

Roger... I guess for context when I dip corals I do it just once... then put it in my observation tank (QT). If all is good after a couple days it goes in my system... if not then it gets another dip and then repeat. I was just wondering how long between dips if the recommendation is to do it 3 times? Prefer not to kill new sticks by doing them too close together when I try this but don't want to drag it out unnecessarily. I'll probably just stick with my current process anyways... thanks

In most everything I've read it is normally a one time dip.

Found a good thread on this over on RC... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1965880

Also was chatting with a buddy out in Northern Cal who runs a coral shop and he had done a side by side comparison between the Bayer Advance and all the other typical Aquarium products out there and he said the Bayer Advance hands down out killed the competition. It kills bugs good...

I picked up a quart at home depot today. Only 13 bucks.

I saw this after I posted in the Monti eating nudibranch thread. This is the method I've chosen for my new additions.

IMO is "in my opinion"
AEFW is "acro eating flatworms"

Thank you. Also would this type of dip work on hammers, Duncans, etc.

I have never used it on those particular corals. The method was discovered and used for sps, mainly to eradicate AEFW and red bugs. Most of the pests on lps and softies are easily eradicated with less harsh dips.

I was reading about this type of dip on rc. I'll have to try it when I eventually move my sticks over to my new setup.

Every frag that goes into my tank goes through a Bayer dip. No exception. There are too many nasty pests out there, and too many horror stories about whole tank infestations. Especially if you have a mixed reef (softies, LPS and SPS), this dip is a must. I have dipped at least a few dozen frags and so far I have only lost a fruitloop zoa frag - but i don't have any reason to believe it was the dip. Fruitloops are notorious melters and it was probably not a healthy frag to begin with. My regimen:

100 mL (half cup) tank water in a disposable plastic cup
add 10 mL bayer dip and swirl
put the frag in for 5 min. stir gently or rock the cup to make sure the dip gets in to all the nooks and crannies. if you look from below you will see pods and worms twisting and dying.
remove the frag. gently shake off as much of the dip. put it in a fresh cup with fresh tank water to rinse off any remaining dip. repeat with another fresh half cup of tank water to remove any traces of dip
now you can put it in your display tank or quarantine tank

So far from my experience the Bayer dip is 100% harmless to the corals even at such high concentrations. However they are deadly to crustaceans - pods, shrimps... As long as you don't inadvertently poison your whole tank with the bayer dip... Also, I wear gloves and do everything at my bathroom sink and wash everything off thoroughly. Like any strong pesticide, these are basic safety measures you should take.
