I have the net module working fine in my house but am unable to get it to work from outside my house. I have the "my mobile reef" app for iphone, itouch, and ipad...I can't get that to work and I can not login from anywhere else. I want to be able to monitor and tinker with the tank when I am away from home. Has anyone had any luck with this? I am not using wireless...I have a dedicated hardwired cat5 cable. Any help out there?

Keep in mind that 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255 IP addresses are reserved for internal/private networks and those addresses cannot be accessed outside of the network they are being used on...

Are you using a router? If so, you will need to setup port forwarding within your router's config so that you can access the module externally. You will want to forward port 80 (or whatever open port you choose) to the internal IP address of the RKM-NET module (192.168.1.x)
Once you do that you would connect using your IP address assigned by your ISP (www.whatismyip.com). If you have a domain name registered, you can set that or a subdomain up to point to that IP address so it will be easier to remember.

That is the link that I have been following from the start.....I need to setup the port forwarding thing up but I am not very experienced with these types of things. I wonder how much of a struggle this thing is going to be to get working from outside my internal network.

What type of router are you using?

the ez way is to get one of the programs that allows you to controll your home pc from a remote location.

That still requires port forwarding...

Port forwarding is easy. Zerreissen has it right, you only need your WAN IP address and an open port. Log into your router, setup a source port to be forwarded to a destination port and your done.

Essentially, this is what happens. You have a WAN IP address which is the IP address your ISP assigns you and it's basically the internet address for your house. Typically, there will be a router or firewall that blocks all unwanted incoming traffic. When you forward a port, basically, that means you are telling your router, 'I'm expecting traffic on this port. When you receive data on this port, forward it to the specified internal address.' The internal address is the IP of the device or computer you are trying to connect to such as zerreissen was talking about (the 192.168.x.x address), in this case, the RKE. If the RKE has a web server, it probably uses port 80 (http), so you would want to forward a port of your choice to the internal IP of the RKE on port 80. I would recommend using a non-standard port, rather than using a standard port such as 80. I would pick something like 12500 and enable port translation to forward to port 80 internally.

Alternately, you could just install an app such as LogMeIn and connect to your PC remotely and then access devices on your LAN that way. Port forwarding is super easy, but it can be confusing if you don't understand what is going on.

If you need help figuring it out, I can jump on a remote session with you and show you how to set it up if you'd like.

That still requires port forwarding...

If you are using RDP, yes, but you can run LogMeIn without touching the router.

oooh buddy I am so confused. I think am using a LINKSYS CISCO WRT160NL and I have time warner cable. I ran a cat5 cable from my router through a wall and through my attic and down through another wall to connect to the net module. I don't want to use a remote desktop type program because I want to be able to access it from an iphone. Terms like "Port forwarding" are new to me.....scratching my head...

Are you at home? If so, I can connect remotely and show you how to set it up. It should only take us a few minutes to get it done.

Port forwarding is just that, forwards traffic on one port to another.

Maybe this would help...
If you live by stone oak I could go and help you...

For what it's worth, this is what needs to be done: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=708b9a21307a478cb93a967b75494cf7_21470.xml&pid=96&slnid=4

It's easier than you think. Don't be scared to forward a port! :)

unfortunately I am at work right now. How can you connect to my computer remotely? Maybe a dumb question... If anyone is willing to help lead the blind (me) through this please PM me your number and let me know whenever is convenient to call if you are available to help me out. I would be happy to recieve any help over the phone, remotely, in person....whatever I can get.

I would have you run a program like TeamViewer which would let you grant me temporary access to your system for remote support. I do it all the time for my users. Unfortunately, you need to have access to your home network so we can get to your router, punch a hole in the firewall, and verify the connection is working.

Sending you a PM now.

Thanks everyone for your help. BIG THANKS to RRASCO for getting online with me last night, it took only a few minutes and everything was working. Robert really knows his stuff. I am now able to monitor my tank from work, and am able to use both "ireef" and "mymobilereef" to monitor from iphone, itouch, and ipad. I am really greatful for all the help you guys provided.
